Additional Shelter Decision for Amateur Fishing Boats in Samsun

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality has decided to build an additional shelter for the increasing number of amateur fishing boats. If positive results are obtained from the geological surveys, the Mert beach area, which has become a shelter for cargo ships drifting ashore, will be transformed into an amateur fishing shelter. President Mustafa Demir said, “The process is carried out by our Department of Studies and Projects. We sent our official letter to DLH. They also demanded that we do some infrastructure studies and geological surveys for the flow of water, and produce seabed maps.” After the scientific studies to be carried out, the studies will start according to the conformity report.
In Samsun, where amateur fishing is widespread, the Metropolitan Municipality offers a solution to the shelter problem for small fishing boats. While the occupancy rate in the existing shelters exceeded 100 percent, a new place was sought for amateur fishing boats.

METROPOLITAN WORK STARTED

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality has started work to ease the sea traffic by easing the burden of shelters used by professional fishermen in Ilkadım and Canik districts. As a result of the technical coastal examination carried out along the coasts of Canik and Atakum, one of the central districts, by the instruction of President Mustafa Demir, the 20 thousand square meter Mert Beach area with a breakwater for amateur fishing boats was selected. The official application letter was sent by contacting the 9th Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, General Directorate of Railways, Ports and Airports Construction (DLH).

AMATEUR FISHING BOAT INCREASES

Expressing that amateur fishing boats are trying to solve the shelter problem, Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Demir said that they took action to build additional shelters. President Demir said, “Samsun is a sea city with the longest coastline of the Black Sea. Amateur fishing is also developing rapidly, and the number of boats is increasing. They need space. We reviewed our existing shelters. There's no room left in the West Park Fisherman's Sanctuary. Doğu Park Fishermen's Shelter serves professional fishermen. Additional shelter has become essential. Hopefully, we will solve this problem as soon as possible," he said.

DECISION WILL BE MADE ACCORDING TO FUTURE REPORTS

Stating that they determined the Mert Beach area for the shelter, President Mustafa Demir said, “Because of its structure, the Black Sea is a difficult sea. These areas are also selected as a result of technical examinations. Therefore, Mert Beach is seen as the most suitable area. The process is carried out by our Department of Studies and Projects. We sent our official letter to DLH. They also demanded that we do some infrastructural studies and geological surveys for the flow of water, and produce seabed maps. We will receive offers from the relevant companies and have these technical studies done by open tender method. We will send the data and maps we will obtain back to the regional directorate. Then they will be evaluated and they will report to us whether they are suitable for shelter or not. If deemed appropriate, we will move Mert Beach to another location and turn this area into an amateur fishing shelter. A place for 120 boats was requested from us. However, if we succeed, 350 boats will be able to be moored there. If it doesn't work out, we will try to find another solution," he said.
