'Migration Exhibition' from Turkey to Germany Opened at Bremen Focke Museum

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyeropened the “Life Paths” exhibition on labor migration from Turkey to Germany, prepared by the Bremen Focke Museum. Minister Tunç Soyer“Those who were once seen as the 'work force' became a source of inspiration and strength for all segments of society. “Those people shaped politics and made discoveries for all humanity.” After the exhibition, President Soyer attended the concert of the group “No Problems” under the artistic direction of Peter Dahm.

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, opened the exhibition titled “Life Paths” prepared by the Bremen Focke Museum for the 25th anniversary of the İzmir-Bremen Sister City Agreement. The exhibition, which tells the stories of people who immigrated from Turkey to Germany with photographs, attracted great attention. After visiting the exhibition, a concert was held, in which the band “No Problems” took the stage.

“Migration is the result of the search for a better life”

Speaking at the opening, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç SoyerStating that it is one of the best examples of the cultural bridges established by the migration of Turkish workers going to Germany, he said, “Lettering was the only form of communication between workers who left Turkey in the 60s with their loved ones. It was a space, a sense of identity and belonging, where they could overcome their longing for the homeland and share a thousand and one difficulties they had to face. Those letters, photographs and tapes were, in a way, homeland. But when the day came, what was once the "workforce" became a source of inspiration and strength for all segments of society. Those people shaped politics and made discoveries for all humanity. From the interaction of different cultures, new avenues have been opened for humanity. The Life Paths Exhibition, which we are opening today, is like letters describing those days. For this precious gift, curator of the exhibition in İzmir after Bremen, Dr. I would like to thank Bora Akşen and Orhan Calisir.”

Bremen Mayor Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte said, “I had the chance to see the exhibition in question in Bremen. I have to admit, when I watched the movies, I was very impressed. It is very important to listen to human stories one-on-one. I would like to thank the architects of the project very much.” German Consul General in Izmir Dr. Detlev Wolter, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of peace and brotherhood in her speech and thanked those who contributed to the organization. Touching on the migration from Turkey to Germany and the difficulties people experience, Dr. Bora Akşen said, “It makes me happy to be able to open this exhibition here. The heroes of the exhibition trusted us and told their stories. I thank them,” he said.

Journalist and documentary filmmaker Orhan Çalışır also gave examples on the historical, cultural and social effects of migration. He thanked Teacher Mahmut Yağmur and Sevinç Yağmur, who took part in the exhibition with his story and photographs. Sevinç Yağmur also came to the podium and shared her experiences in Germany with the participants.

President Soyer attended the concert of the 6-member music group of Peter Dahm and Güvenç Birer after the opening of the exhibition. To the last song of the concert, Bremen Mayor Dr. Andrea Bovenschulte accompanied with guitar.
