Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank announced that the Gemlik Olive, whose registration processes will be completed as of May 28, will be officially accepted as a geographically marked product by the European Union.

Minister Varank, who visited the Gemlik Olive Market within the scope of the Bursa program, met with the olive tradesmen. sohbet gave information about the geographical indication registration for the Gemlik Olive in the European Union.

Reminding that they started an international geographical indication mobilization in January in order to protect Turkey's local and regional values ​​effectively at the international level, Minister Varank stated that the number of products registered in the EU will increase from 9 to 14 with the geographical indications whose objection process will be completed.

APPLICATION FOR 41 PRODUCTS

Expressing that they want to register Turkey's 100 products with high commercial potential at the international level at the first stage, Varank stated that the proceedings regarding 41 applications are still continuing before the EU Commission.

Reminding that the geographical indication registration of the world-famous Gemlik Olive in Turkey was given by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office as the Ministry of Industry and Technology, Minister Varank continued as follows:

“Now, this product has become a product that is registered geographically, products that really meet the conditions are registered and traded and registered. We have not only registered this product in Turkey. We have made an application together with the Bursa-Bilecik-Eskişehir Development Agency (BEBKA), which is affiliated to our Ministry, in order to obtain the registration of our geographical indication in the European Union. An announcement was made in the Official Gazette of the European Commission for the registration of Gemlik Olives. As of May 28, this registration process will be completed. Now, the Gemlik Olive will become an officially recognized product in the European Union. We wish you good luck."

10. PRODUCT RECOGNIZED IN EUROPE

Pointing out that Turkey is one of the richest countries in the world with its local characteristics and local products, Varank said:

“Up to now, 9 products from Turkey have been registered with the European Union. The registration of the Gemlik Olive as the 10th product will be completed and we will market this product much better in the world markets. From now on, this product will be demanded as 'Gemlik Olive' in the world. This is how we will advertise it. Of course, we also have applications to continue the geographical indication registration of different products of Bursa in the world. We await their results. In the coming period, we will have obtained the registrations of Bursa Peach, Bursa Black Fig and Bursa Chestnut in Europe.”

THERE ARE 4 PRODUCTS IN THE LINE

In addition to the Gemlik Olive, Suruç Pomegranate, whose objection period expires on May 10, and Çağlayancerit Walnut, whose objection period expires on May 22, is expected to be completed in June.

On the other hand, it is expected that the appeal periods for Edremit Olive Oil and Milas Oil Olive, for which geographical indication applications have been made and the examination processes have been completed, expire.

THERE ARE 9 PRODUCTS REGISTERED IN THE EU

Turkey currently has 9 registered geographical indications in the European Union: Antep Baklava, Aydın Fig, Malatya Apricot, Aydın Chestnut, Milas Olive Oil, Bayramiç White, Taşköprü Garlic, Giresun Chubby Hazelnut and Antakya Künefe.
