When will Cobra Kai season come out?

Ralph Macchio has shared some new information about Cobra Kai season 6, and it's time to claim your favorite dojo because Cobra Kai is officially returning for a new season. When will Cobra Kai season 6 be released? Will Cobra Kai have 7 seasons?

The beloved nostalgic comedy last added new episodes in September 2022, and the fact that months went by without a renewal announcement was starting to make its fans nervous. But fortunately, Netflix has given the green light to the series, and they're calling it the "biggest" and "worst" season. It will also mark the final season.

Cobra Kai is a sequel to the classic Karate Kid movies, with many original actors reprising their roles. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka face off as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, respectively, 30 years after the first movie. Now dads, the two have different perspectives than they had when they were kids, but they still get head-to-head occasionally.

We're updating this story as we learn more. The last update was on Monday, April 24, 2023.

Cobra Kai season 6 latest news

There have been some big developments about Cobra Kai season 6 lately. We have shared the list of latest news updates below.

  • Ralph Macchio told Deadline in April that he has yet to see a script for Cobra Kai season 6.
  • Production of Cobra Kai season 6 will reportedly begin in late spring 2023.
  • Production, also listed by Production Weekly, will reportedly end in the summer of 2023.
  • Macchio announced that production would hopefully begin in May, but that was during his Comic-Con appearance in Atlanta.

Cobra Kai season 6 is the final season.

The creators of Cobra Kai, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, shared a letter with their fans on Netflix today, along with the announcement. They explain their decision to end the show by stating that they want to finish Cobra Kai “on our terms”. Although they see this as the end of the story, they tease that there may be spin-offs at some point in the future.

“This fandom is the BEST on the planet and we hope to tell more Karate Kid stories with you. Because as we all know, Cobra Kai Never Dies,” the creators write. Check out the full announcement in the tweet below:

When is Cobra Kai season 6 filming?

Despite new episodes coming in September 2022, the cast and crew have not yet started filming for Cobra Kai season 6. Jon Hurwitz confirmed on Twitter that Cobra Kai season 6 writers room began writing the season in February 2023.

We launched the Cobra Kai S6 writers room two weeks ago. I love spending time with this smart and fun group. It's like we've never been apart. So many great ideas flowing. You are all in a treat. #CobraKai #Netflix https://t.co/pG8R7plgX4

While Cobra Kai season 6 is still in the writing process, production still has a long way to go, and that's not good for a release date. We still have some updates on when production might start, though.

According to fans who attended the Cobra Kai panel at Atlanta Comic-Con in February 2023, Ralph Macchio announced that production of Cobra Kai season 6 will begin in May 2023.

Deadline reported that production will begin in late spring 2023, but there is no official start date for filming yet. Production Weekly also stated that production will begin in late spring and will end in the summer of 2023.

As we have seen in the other seasons of the series, the actors and the team can work very quickly in this series. We've seen shorter gaps between seasons of Cobra Kai than we've seen in just about every Netflix show.

Does Cobra Kai season 6 have a release date yet?

Cobra Kai season 6 does not have a release date yet. We probably won't know the release date for a while, but it's an interesting crease to share with fans.

Deadline and Production Weekly have shared potential production windows, and it looks like things will end in the summer of 2023. That's not good for those hoping to see Cobra Kai season 6 soon. In post production, we're looking at a minimum release date of late 2023 or early 2024.

Currently, a late 2023 release date is nearly impossible, as production begins later this year. It may already be too late for the 2023 release. Plus, Cobra Kai season 6 will be the final season of the series. Netflix will kick off the season at a time when it can stand alone and shine, and I don't think Christmas or New Year's Eve/Day will be that time.

The other part of that equation is that they make fun of “KOBRA KAI'S GREATEST SEASON EVER” in the renewal announcement released in January 2023. We don't know exactly what this means, but we have to assume that this could mean more choreography, more action sequences, potentially new locations and more.

We would love to see Cobra Kai season 6 before spring 2024, but that seems unlikely. For now, expect to see season 6 of Cobra Kai in spring 2024. Until we hear something different, we'll be cautious about the exit forecast.

Release Forecast: Spring 2024

Cobra Kai season 6 trailer

It's still too early for the official Cobra Kai season 6 trailer, but Netflix has released a trailer announcing the final season. There doesn't seem to be any new footage in the clip, but it's still enough to get fans excited by the news. We're so excited to see our favorite characters on our screens again and can't wait to see how the story ends! Check out the video here:

Cobra Kai season 6 cast

At the time of this writing, we can assume that most of the main cast and supporters will be returning for Cobra Kai season 6. This includes:

  • William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence
  • Miguel Diaz as Xolo Mariduena
  • Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso
  • Tanner Buchanan as Robby Keene
  • Jacob Bertrand as Eli 'Hawk' Moskowitz
  • Courtney Henggeler as Amanda LaRusso
  • Peyton List as Tory Nichols
  • Martin Kove as John Kreese
  • Yuji Okumoto as Chozen Toguchi
  • Vanessa Rubio as Carmen Diaz
  • Dallas Dupree Young as Kenny Payne

The cast for season 6 is subject to change, so we'll keep this report updated as we hear any casting news!

Will Hilary Swank be in Cobra Kai season 6?

There has been a lot of talk about Hilary Swank, who plays Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid, joining the cast of Cobra Kai season 6. So far there has been no confirmation that this will happen. Frankly, we want it to be! We've seen so many great Karate Kid cameos over the course of five seasons. Bringing Julie Pierce back would make a lot of sense, especially as these characters will be taking part in a global tournament in the sixth and final season.

Swank previously stated that he was not asked to appear in the series. According to CinemaBlend, Macchio recently shared his thoughts on the subject and said he would be open to it.

If they can include Swank in the series, it will likely be announced before the season 6 premiere. It's hard to keep the big stars a secret in 2023!

Cobra Kai end of season 5 and what that means for season 6

The ending of Cobra Kai season 5 is wild, but there is a feeling that season 6 will be even more eventful. Kreese escapes from prison in the season 5 finale, so we're pretty sure he'll be one of the main protagonists of next season, possibly trying to get revenge on Silver once again. Given the two kinds of changes made in season 5, we'll be wondering what her relationship with Daniel and Johnny will be like. They have a chance to be a team in the new season.

Tory and Robby reunite at the end of season 5, just like Sam and Miguel. We anticipate that season 6 will give both couples the happy endings they deserve. Johnny and Carmen's relationship also takes a more serious turn, and they'll likely see them give birth to a baby in season six. There's no doubt that Johnny will struggle with fatherhood once again, but I think he'll do a better job this time around.

There's a lot waiting for Cobra Kai season 6 and we're so happy the story will continue for one more chapter! Cobra Kai is one of the best shows on Netflix right now!
