The scientific committee formed by Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality for the latest status of historical buildings after the earthquake and the studies to be carried out was convened.

The first reports were presented to Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin and the heads of the relevant units, after the meetings and examinations of the scientific committee composed of academicians from different disciplines.

THE REPORT CONSIDERS HISTORICAL BUILDINGS IN MULTIPLE ANGLES

From ITU Faculty of Architecture, Dr. Faculty Member Gülsün Tanyeli and Dr. Faculty Member Umut Almaç, ITU Mining Faculty Prof.Dr. Tuncay Taymaz from Mersin University, Faculty of Architecture, Prof.Dr. Tamer Gök, retired Art Historian Mustafa Servet Akpolat from Hacettepe University, Head of Gaziantep University Archeology Department Prof. Dr. Atilla Engin and Art Historian Prof. Dr. In the reporting of the scientific committee formed by Nusret Çam, historical buildings were examined in the report from many aspects.

In the report prepared at the end of the study carried out in Gaziantep Castle, inns, mosques, baths, castels, fountains and civil architecture examples, which were affected by the earthquake, the types of damages, what caused them and solution suggestions were mentioned.

It was stated in the report that life safety measures should be taken, the safety of the buildings, the documentation of all heritage titles, the inscriptions that fell in the earthquake, the protection of tiles, badges, muqarnas, and the creation of projects with multidisciplinary studies.

ŞAHİN: WE WILL BUILD THE INFRASTRUCTURE TO RETURN THE TEXTURES OF ALL PERIODS

Making a statement about the works to be carried out, President Fatma Şahin stated that after the earthquake disaster, historical buildings will be improved, solved and strengthened in the light of science:

“We will quickly return Gaziantep, which is a 'City of Culture', 'City of Science', and 'City of Art', to its old days with the decisions of the Scientific Committee. Each of our professors here is an expert in their field. When we look at it, we have a very important report that emerged from the studies carried out by listening to the voice of science at a time when the inns, baths and minarets, especially the Gaziantep Castle, needed to be restored as soon as possible according to the area of ​​expertise of each. According to this report, we will create the infrastructure that will quickly restore the city's textures of all periods, what we need to do in stages, firstly with the titles of security and then documentation. I would like to thank each of our teachers on behalf of myself, my city and my country.”

ACADEMICIANS HAVE ASSESSED

Commenting on the works, Mustafa Servet Akpolat stated that he has been conducting scientific research on Gaziantep Castle since 1993 and said, “The earthquake caused great damage to the castle. It was as if I had seen a patient in intensive care. We will try to heal the wounds of the city and the castle in the short and medium term," he said.

Prof. dr. Tuncay Taymaz, on the other hand, stated that as Gaziantep, the leadership and ownership of President Fatma Şahin and the governor makes it very valuable in working on the protection of cultural assets.

Dr. Tamer Gök emphasized that he believes that he will overcome the damage of the earthquake in a very short time, and under the guidance of science, in the light of knowledge, the restoration will be completed in a short time and the assets will be presented to the benefit of culture and society.

Stating that he appreciated the initiatives regarding historical buildings in Gaziantep, Dr. Faculty Member Gülsün Tanyeli said, “President Fatma Şahin plays an important role in getting started quickly. A formation that will set an example for the studies in other cities has been put forward and we will support him with the reports we have prepared afterwards. For this, we will make recommendations on how to proceed and how to approach cultural assets.
