Spoilers from Purple Hearts ahead!
Purple Hearts 2 coming?
As of May 2023, Netflix has not indicated that a sequel is being worked on. There's very little chance of it being Purple Hearts 2. The romantic drama ends pretty neatly with Cassie and Luke ending up together. Therefore, the continuation of the story seems unnecessary.
However, if there's going to be a sequel, it could follow Cassie and Luke's lives as a real married couple. Maybe they even had children. Like any married couple, there will be problems. Remember, Luke was fired from the US Marine Corps after being accused of fraud. This may cause some problems in their relationship with Luke, who is having trouble finding a job. Then, Cassie's singing career takes off. That means he'll be on different tours and never really be home. This can cause some tension in their relationship.
Sofia Carson is open to Purple Hearts sequel
In an interview with Variety in August 2022, Carson and Rosenbaum talked about the making of the film, the casting of Galitzine as Luke, and (of course!) fan demand for a sequel. As noted, the love story seems to have an ending in the movie, but fans couldn't get enough of Cassie and Luke.
Fortunately, Carson seems to agree with them. He told Variety:
“Now that fans are demanding a sequel, and there are so many fan theories, fan stories, and potential spin-offs, it's certainly nice to think of a life beyond this movie for Cassie and Luke. I love being Cassie and I wonder where this is going. Who knows. You never know!”
Rosenbaum echoed Carson's sentiments, and Variety said there were talks about continuing the story in a sequel, although "it's nothing official." Here's what the director shared with Variety:
“I mean, I could watch the two of them and their chemistry all day. And they're great people to work with, so I certainly won't overlook it. We wouldn't do anything unless we truly, truly love, because we want to stick to honesty. We haven't gotten down to anything specific yet. This is always a possibility.”
Unfortunately for fans, Netflix didn't put a sequel in development, but as Carson said, you never know. The movie's lead roles are busy as Carson starred in an Oscar in 2023, won an MTV Movie & TV Award for "Come Back Home" from Purple Hearts, and will be seen on Netflix's Carry-On from now on. Galitzine will next star in Red, White & Royal Blue, with Anne Hathaway in the film adaptation of The Idea of You and in the Sky/AMC series Mary & George.
If a sequel comes out in the future, there are plenty of ideas for a Purple Hearts 2 if Netflix approves. We'll have to wait and see what Netflix decides. For now, expect Purple Hearts to be a one-shot movie.
