It's been a long time since we shared many updates about The Sandman, and that's because there wasn't a ton of new information to share. That's changing as we move into 2023, but right now this isn't all good news. There's a lot of uncertainty in the TV industry, and while Netflix hasn't commented on it, The Sandman appears to be affected by the writers' strike.
We've shared everything we know so far about The Sandman season 2 (not actually called season 2), including release information, cast, filming and much more. We'll update this story as we learn more about the new season of The Sandman. The last update was on Friday, May 5, 2023.
Sandman season 2 latest news
- In April 2023, ComicBook.com reported that Neil Gaiman provided an update on The Sandman season 2 via Tumblr:
“Scenarios are written. We are casting the first episode we will shoot. Sets are being designed.”
- In May 2023, the WGA is on strike. Unless a deal is reached, The Sandman season 2 will likely be paused until that deal is reached. We've seen some shows continue production throughout the strike, but without showrunners and writers on set, it's problematic and risky.
- Production on The Sandman season 2 begins this summer and runs through fall, but it will be split into two parts, Netflix reported. The second piece is scheduled from January to April 2024.
Sandman is season 2 but it's not called season 2
I mean, it's so confusing, and no one other than the big decision makers at Netflix and those working on the show are actually asking why The Sandman season 2 is actually "Season 2". He doesn't really understand that it's not called "season". But that's really off topic. More Sandman is coming to Netflix.
Netflix announced the news in November 2023, after making Sandman fans sweat for several months. It's unclear what's next, but it's pretty clear that Netflix has big plans for the future of this series and its characters.
Mason Alexander Park shared an update on season 2 with fans earlier this year. Here's what Park had to say via Digital Spy:
“There's more Sandman coming out really cool and it can take many forms, so we're starting filming in the summer and we'll be tackling the next huge pile of stories no matter how long it takes. I'm really excited to finally share the format of this with everyone."
This is certainly good news, but it probably means it will be a while before we see more Sandman on Netflix.
When is The Sandman season 2 shooting?
The Sandman season 2 has not started filming yet. This clearly makes sense looking at the August release date and the November refresh. Neil Gaiman tweeted that the scripts for the season end in 2022, so the story is ready to go. It all depends on the production schedule.

Park mentioned that filming for The Sandman (not) season 2 began this summer. It will last until April 204.
Netflix has yet to share exactly how much Sandman will be in season 2. Obviously, the number of episodes, how extensive these shots will be, and how much post-production work will need to be done will determine how long we'll have to wait for new episodes of the series.
Has Netflix announced The Sandman season 2 release date yet?
No, we are still waiting for any news regarding the release date of new episodes of The Sandman. According to a summer production start date for new episodes, we're unlikely to see The Sandman season 2023 on Netflix in 2.
We may see The Sandman season 2 on Netflix in 2024 at the earliest, but that also depends on how Netflix will release this next batch of episodes. To this "2. season" makes me wonder if they'll release new episodes more sporadically throughout the year or over a period of time, instead of the regular, full-season Netflix drop.
This is an expensive show with lots of moving parts and post-production work. If production runs until 2024, chances are we won't see this show return until 2025, but that's pretty much the worst case scenario.
As of May 2023, we are currently still sticking to the fall 2024 release forecast. If studios and networks can't get along with writers and eventually production is delayed, things can be delayed further. We'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

There are also new characters likely to join The Sandman season 2. Gaiman seems to have confirmed in a recent interview that Delirium will be introduced in new episodes.

What's next in The Sandman season 2?
There is so much source material available to the authors for The Sandman season 2 that the series is clearly based on Neil Gaiman's comic books of the same name. Any of these stories could be adapted for this series.
The obvious story is for Lucifer, Desire, Despair, and others who (I guess we could call it that) want revenge on Morpheus. That would be interesting, and I believe, even though I haven't read the comics, there is precedent to expect this story in new chapters.
Unfortunately, we'll just have to wait and see where the story goes. We hope Gaiman and the creative team share some more details as production begins.
