China Begins Trials in Boao Region for 'Zero Carbon'

Committed to reducing carbon emissions and zeroing them by 2060, China is establishing trial zones for zero carbon. In one of them, Boao, the first 16 projects were recently completed. The projects in question have reached the trial stage to initiate the "zero carbon emission test". Located on Dongyu Island near Boao city, this project, which combines agriculture and photovoltaic plant (solar energy), covers an area of 22 hectares. The project is essentially based on the idea of providing “zero emissions” farming by placing solar panels near farmland.

Hu Yaowen, Director of the Hainan Branch of the Institute for Urbanization Design and Research, stated that the Boao district aims to create a model that is more easily applicable and can be used as an example compared to other green projects.

The zero carbon emission demonstration zone will realize the process of reducing emissions continuously, thanks to the different technologies that will be applied until it reaches an emission rate that approaches zero. According to the estimates, the 16 projects realized can reduce carbon emissions by 9 thousand 55,8 tons per year and provide a clean energy capacity of 15,1 million kilowatt-hours per year. The remaining projects will be completed ahead of the Boao Forum for Asia 2024.
