AFAD Announces 'We Don't Want Any Documents From Earthquake Victims'

Yunus Sezer, President of AFAD, said, “There are different evaluations from our citizens, such as asking for an 'information card in earthquake victims', that they are victims of disasters. We do not want any documents. When they go, their residence is questioned and appropriate accommodation is provided for them.

AFAD President Sezer, AFAD Earthquake and Risk Reduction General Manager Orhan Tatar made statements at AFAD Headquarters regarding the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş that caused great damage in 10 provinces.

Regarding the claims that documents are requested from earthquake victims when they leave the region and go to a different province, AFAD President Sezer said, “10 of our provinces have been designated as disaster areas. Our intensive evacuation continues for those who want to leave the disaster area among our citizens living in the disaster area. Regarding the evacuation, evacuation centers have been established in 10 provinces where our citizens can apply, and our gendarmerie has been assigned for this. Our aim here is: If our citizens do not have their own means, we have the opportunity to evacuate with the appropriate means to be prepared by us. We are trying to send our citizens to each province with different possibilities. We asked our citizens to go to the evacuation center and report it first. After the notification, their names and identity numbers are entered into the system and they are on the desk of the accommodation center commissions we have prepared in the cities they will go to, in which city, which accommodation center they will go to. When our citizens go, they are offered accommodation in shelter centers prepared in advance without experiencing any grievances. Apart from this statement, there are citizens who leave unaware of this, and if they apply to the commissions we have formed in the governorates, their residences are checked and suitable accommodation is offered to them. There are different evaluations from our citizens, such as asking for an 'earthquake information card' that they are victims of disasters. We do not want any documents. When they go, their residence is questioned and suitable accommodation is provided for them. We want them to go to the evacuation points in their provinces for this reason. The number of our provinces is gradually increasing, starting from 8 provinces, I would like to underline, 'We do not want any documents.' It will be a facilitating process for our citizens to notify the evacuation places in their provinces," he said.

Opportunities to be Provided to Earthquake Victims remain

AFAD President Sezer stated that earthquake survivors who change provinces will not lose their rights, and said: "Our citizens who are evacuated or our citizens who are evacuated other than us and go to the provinces reach us because of the disinformation in the social media, because of the disinformation in the social media, it is a matter of whether they apply to us or not. does not cause loss of rights. All the opportunities of our state to be given to the disaster victims are permanent. Please do not rely on statements other than official statements from us, we do not want our citizens to be victimized anywhere.”

350-400 Kilometer Surface Fracture Occurred

Orhan Tatar, General Manager of AFAD Earthquake and Risk Reduction, said, “The Anatolian geography has faced great earthquakes in the last 2 years. We estimate that 350-400 kilometers of surface rupture occurred on the Eastern Anatolian fault due to the earthquake, the information conveyed by our colleagues working in the field is in this direction. After such large earthquakes, devastating aftershocks occur. There are over 1600 aftershocks. 326 of them are between sizes 4-5, 37 of them are between sizes 5-6. The earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 to 5 that we experienced in 6 days have exceeded 1 times the number of earthquakes of similar magnitude that we have measured in 3 year. AFAD records around 22-23 thousand earthquakes annually. In particular, we would like to emphasize that after such a catastrophic earthquake, it is quite normal for us to see aftershocks above 6 degrees. It is very important for our citizens to stay away from damaged buildings," he said.
