Stock, fisheries/hunting and aquaculture researches, bio-ecological, genetic, oceanographic and limnological researches and breeding studies are carried out by institutes operating on aquaculture under the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

With the end of the ban on fishing as of September 1, the fish markets started to move. As in the world, the aquaculture sector is developing day by day in Turkey with its production and trade dimensions. Turkey is in a lucky position in aquaculture production with its seas, inland waters, lakes and ponds.

Turkey's seas and inland waters have a surface area of approximately 25 million hectares. This means an area close to agricultural fields. In order to benefit from these resources efficiently in the future, their protection and sustainable use are of great importance.

Within the body of TAGEM, which is affiliated to our Ministry, institutes working on aquaculture carry out stock research, fisheries/hunting research, bio-ecological and genetic research, oceanographic and limnological research, aquaculture research and breeding studies.

The Trabzon Fisheries Central Research Institute, whose area of responsibility is the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean Fisheries Research, Production and Training Institute, whose area of responsibility is the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, was conducted by SÜRAT Research-1 and Marine researches are carried out with Mediterranean Research-I ships.

In addition, projects are implemented by Eğirdir Fisheries Research Institute and Elazig Fisheries Research Institute in lakes and dam lakes within the scope of monitoring commercial fisheries stocks in inland waters.

While the production of aquaculture was mostly done by hunting in the past, today the amount of hunting and aquaculture is close to each other. The amount of sea fish caught in the last fishing season was recorded as 292 thousand tons. When the distribution of sea fish caught by species is analyzed, anchovy was the fish caught in the highest amount with 171 thousand tons. Anchovy was followed by sprat with 27 thousand tons and acorn and toric with 23 thousand tons. Compared to the riparian countries, more than 60% of the fishing is done by Turkish fishermen in the Black Sea, which is our most fertile sea. In addition, fisheries activities have been carried out for 25 years in order to support the natural stocks by the institutes affiliated to the Ministry.

MINISTER KIRİŞCI: “Credit usage started as of September 1”

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Prof. Dr. Vahit Kirişci reminded that the ban on fishing in the seas ended as of September 1, and that he said "Vira bismillah" with the fishermen in Istanbul. Stressing the importance of protecting the ecosystem in the seas, Kirişci stated that it is necessary to protect not only fish, but also seagrass, algae and the entire marine ecosystem. Noting that as a Ministry, they protect the seas and inland waters with control and inspection boats, Kirişci underlined that their aim is to protect both the present and future of the country and the citizens who make a living with fishing.

In this context, with the instructions of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Kirişci reminded that they paved the way for fishermen to use business loans from Ziraat Bank with a policy rate of 13,5 percent, and that he gave this good news on September 1, Kirişci said, “Applications have started to be received and loans have been made available. I wish good luck to our fishermen once again," he said.
