Mathematics Will Be a Loved Subject, Not a Feared Subject

Mathematics is one of the lessons that students fear the most. The Ministry of National Education made radical changes regarding Mathematics Class in its new curriculum.

In the Turkish Century Education Model, the mathematics curriculum adopts a skill-oriented, meaning and need-based approach, aiming to make mathematics a subject that is discovered rather than memorized, loved rather than feared. In this context, mathematics field skills covering primary, secondary and high school levels were determined and the curriculum was arranged according to these skills.

Mathematics Field Skills

  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Mathematical Problem Solving
  • Mathematical Representation
  • Working with Data and Making Data-Based Decisions
  • Working with Mathematical Tools and Technology

Changes in the Curriculum

  • Primary school:
    • Topics of numbers, geometry, and statistics & probability are placed relationally and coherently.
    • Relationality was brought to the fore by giving the four operations addition and subtraction together, and multiplication and division together.
    • The learning objectives were bridged by giving the intuitive comparison before 4 treatments.
    • Number sense and concept development in children were taken into account.
    • Visual geometric thought was brought to the fore and the part-whole relationship was emphasized.
    • Data-based research has been used in all its steps since the first grade.
    • Probability started to be taught from simple to complex starting from the 4th grade.
    • Fractions, time, measuring liquids, operating processes with standard measuring tools, and calendar reading have been moved to the 2nd grade.
    • The goal of learning Roman numerals was removed and applications related to time measurement were included.
    • Bar chart was transferred to 5th grade, area measurement was removed.
    • Ray, line, segment and plane topics were transferred to the 5th grade.
    • Quick counting, shape patterns, coding and algorithm activities have been added.
  • Middle school:
    • A transition was made from a fragmented outcome structure to a holistic content structure.
    • Operationally challenging contents have been moved to secondary education.
    • Interdisciplinary relations were prioritized.
    • Operations with radical expressions were moved to secondary education, and in secondary school, importance was given to making sense of the set of real numbers in the context of radical expressions.
      1. Starting from the first grade, the concepts of linear ratio and function started to be included.
    • Tools and technology were used at every grade level.
    • More emphasis was placed on statistics and probability.
    • Algorithm topic was added to the program.
  • High school:
    • Contents that had a high computational burden and did not serve meaningful learning were removed and new ones were added.
    • The relationship between mathematics and algorithm-informatics was established for the first time in this program.
    • Statistics issues were reconsidered in the context of "the ability to work with data and make data-based decisions".
    • Topics related to numbers, algebra and functions have been redesigned with functions at the center.
    • Sets and logic topics were restructured by integrating them into other topics.
    • The use of tools and technology in geometry was highlighted.
    • Instead of the concept of integral, limit and derivative issues were discussed more comprehensively.

general evaluation

Turkey Century Education Model Mathematics Curriculum moves mathematics away from memorization and operationalization and makes it more meaningful, skill-oriented and problem-solving oriented. In this way, it is aimed for students to develop their mathematical thinking skills, solve the problems they encounter in daily life with mathematical models, and better understand mathematical concepts.
