Konya is an exemplary city in public transportation

Konya Metropolitan Municipality is developing map-based applications by taking advantage of technological opportunities in order to increase service quality in public transportation.

Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay reminded that in order to strengthen public transportation in Konya, they included 181 new buses into the Metropolitan Municipality's fleet and opened new interchanges and streets.

Noting that they continue to be a model for Turkey with the practices they have implemented in urban public transportation services, Mayor Altay said, “Our Konya Metropolitan Municipality is participating as a partner in the Justice Project supported by the European Union and financed by TÜBİTAK. One of the applications developed within the scope of the project to increase public transportation accessibility and inclusiveness is map-based analysis studies. Konya is one of the cities in Europe where the project is implemented, along with Brussels and Strasbourg. With the prepared software, analyzes are carried out regarding transportation to certain points using public transportation in city centers. In the project, with the transportation times created on the map, it is determined how long it takes for the person to reach the place he wants to go from his current location using the public transportation vehicles of the Metropolitan Municipality. "The study also includes analyzes for the physically and visually impaired," he said.

Emphasizing that the project will increase the efficiency of urban transportation and reduce traffic density, Mayor Altay said, "The project will also contribute to making the city's public transportation network more effective and accessible."

EUROPEAN UNION SUPPORTED “JUSTICE PROJECT”

Within the scope of the project, transportation times are shown on the map with different color tones. In the map studies created according to 0-minute transportation times such as 10-10 minutes, 20-20 minutes, 30-10 minutes, it is shown how long it takes for a person to reach the place he wants to go from his current point to the place he wants to go with the buses and trams used in public transportation of Konya Metropolitan Municipality. This study is important in terms of both improving the current situation and providing projections on what impact new public transportation investments will have on city transportation.

The Justice Project, which will last 36 months in three cities, basically aims to increase the accessibility of disadvantaged groups to public transportation opportunities and to design the public transportation system with a more inclusive approach. For this reason, with a participatory approach, with the contributions of non-governmental organizations, public transportation trips are made with physically disabled, visually impaired, elderly and low-income people, and their opinions constitute an important part of the project work.
