Speed and Quality Comparison between Human Doctors and Artificial Intelligence

Swedish and Swiss researchers conducted a 6-case pilot study comparing Chat GPT and manpower in terms of speed and consistency. Within the scope of the research, hospital discharge papers of fictional cases prepared by 2 orthopedic surgeons were filled out by both doctors and Chat GPT. Later, these reports were presented to a committee of 15 experts in the field. While experts could not distinguish the difference between the reports, it was determined that doctors spent an average of 27,8 minutes for each report they prepared manually, while Chat GPT needed an average of 2,9 minutes to create a report of similar quality.

Time and Quality Advantage with Chat GPT

Cyrus Broden, an orthopedic doctor at Uppsala University Hospital in Switzerland, emphasized that the notes prepared by Chat GPT are generally of similar quality to those prepared by human hands, but that artificial intelligence is approximately 10 times faster than humans. Broden stated that they have started working on artificial intelligence tests on a larger data set. Pointing out the need to reduce the paperwork burden of doctors, Broden said, "Advances in artificial intelligence allow doctors to spend more time with their patients by reducing the administrative workload of healthcare professionals." he said.

Details of the research were published in the journal "Acta Orthopaedica".
