Examination of Izmit Bay Turning Red

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, which does not compromise on sea pollution and protects the Gulf of Izmit against possible dangers with both land and air inspections, made a detailed inspection after it was seen that the sea on the Gulf Tütünçiftlik Coast had turned red. Environmental Protection and Control Department teams reported that the situation in question was due to seasonal transition.

ANALYZED IN TUBITAK

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, which is one of the institutions that carry out the most stringent maritime inspection in Turkey, did not find any negative effects that may arise from mucilage or ships as a result of its research on the subject. Environmental Protection and Control Department teams, who took samples from the areas where color changes were observed in Izmit Bay and analyzed them at TUBITAK-MAM Marine Research and Technologies Laboratories, reported that there was no situation to worry about in Izmit Bay.

MUCILAJ FORMATION WAS NOT OBSERVED

As a result of microscopic examinations carried out on the samples by TÜBİTAK-MAM, it was determined that the color change in question was caused by seasonal phytoplankton proliferation. In the statement made by the Metropolitan Municipality, “In the investigations; No mucilage formation was observed, and it was determined that prorocentrummicans, a dinoflagellate species, overproliferated in the samples and caused the red-tide phenomenon. "This living species is a resident species in the Gulf of Izmit, and if suitable conditions occur, it multiplies excessively and causes such biological change events to occur from time to time."

BIOLOGICAL CHANGE EVENTS

It was stated that the most important reason for this phenomenon, which was observed in different parts of the Marmara Sea, was due to the entry of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus into the marine environment after rainfall. Metropolitan officials stated that this biological change, which causes the water to turn red or brown in spring, can be seen for a short time.
