Ophthalmologist Op. stated that cataract, which occurs as a result of the clear lens inside the eye becoming cloudy due to time and environmental factors, prevents clear vision. Dr. Fevziye Öndeş Yılmaz said, “Patients with cataracts apply to us with complaints such as decreased vision, blurred vision and light scattering. It is not possible to prevent age-related cataracts, nor is it possible to treat them with medication. "The only treatment for cataracts is surgery," he said.

Ophthalmologist Op. from Dünyagöz Ataköy'den Hospital. Dr. Fevziye Öndeş Yılmaz stated that cataracts, which usually occur due to age, may also be present at birth and said: “The natural lens of the eye loses its transparency over time. Apart from aging, cataracts may also occur due to eye injuries, diabetes, cortisone drug use and metabolic diseases. Cataracts may not affect vision much at first, but over time, as vision levels decrease, the patient's complaints increase. The patient comes to us when he/she begins to have difficulty doing his/her daily activities. "When the patient's vision reaches this level, we decide on surgery," he said.

“The lens that has lost its properties is replaced by cataract surgery.”

Op. stated that cataract, which occurs when the natural lens in our eyes loses its transparency over time and environmental factors, can be operated on and the patient can have clear vision. Dr. Yılmaz said, “During cataract surgery, we remove the natural lens in the patient's eye and replace it with artificial intraocular lenses. "It is possible to provide clear vision in our suitable patients without the need for glasses with different types of lenses placed into the eye during cataract surgery," he said.

Op said that multifocal lenses, also called smart lenses, are a treatment method recommended for patients with suitable eye structures. Dr. Yılmaz said, “In middle-aged people who want to get rid of glasses before cataracts develop, near, distance and astigmatism refractive errors can be treated with a lens placed inside the eye. Cataract or clear lens replacement surgery, which is completed in a short time, is performed under drop anesthesia. Apart from the classical method, cataract surgeries can also be performed with Femtosecond laser devices. Recovery time is short. It is possible to return to normal daily life in a few days. A one-month drop treatment is required after surgery. "The lenses placed inside the eye are biocompatible with the eye tissue and remain intact for years without deterioration," he said.

Examination and patient selection are important

Emphasizing the importance of correctly determining the vision needs of the patient to be treated, Op. Dr. Yılmaz said, “Smart lenses have two different models: trifocal and edof. Trifocal lenses provide clear vision at far, medium and near distances; Edof lenses show far and middle distance clearly. After a detailed eye examination and detailed examinations using advanced technology, the appropriate intraocular lens model for the patient is decided. Here, the patient's age, profession, and need for near and far vision without glasses are important. The eye structure of some patients may not be suitable for this type of intraocular lenses, or such lenses may not fully meet the expectations of some patients. "Surgical experience and technical facilities are very important in choosing the right patient and appropriate intraocular lens," he said.
