Prof. from the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital. Dr. Burak Onan gave information about the robotic surgery method in heart diseases. Touching on the fact that robotic surgery methods are frequently recommended to patients with the development of technology, Onan said, “It is preferred in suitable patients due to both the faster recovery of the patient and the post-operative cosmetic advantages. In heart surgeries performed with the robotic surgery method, the thorax is not opened, and important results such as less scarring, successful cosmetic results and a more comfortable healing process occur.

Pointing out that different heart diseases can be treated with robotic surgery, Onan added, "Many of the surgeries performed by opening the thoracic cage in heart surgeries can easily be performed with the robotic surgery technique."

prof. Dr. Burak Onan listed the surgeries that can be treated with robotic surgery as follows:

“Coronary bypass surgeries: Robotic surgery allows coronary bypass surgeries to be performed without opening the thorax. The preparation of the two arteries in the inner part of the chest for the bypass operation is possible with the robotic surgery technique. The use of these vessels in bypass surgeries provides the most successful results. With these vessels, closed bypass surgery can be performed through a small opening of 4-5 cm on the left side, without opening the chest from the front.

Tricuspid valve surgeries: In tricuspid valve disorders, repair and valve replacement operations can be performed with robotic surgery.

Treatment of heart holes and congenital heart diseases: Simple congenital heart diseases such as ASD or PAPVD in the heart can be treated with robotic surgery. In these surgeries, anatomical correction can be successfully applied without opening the thorax.

Removal of heart tumors: The majority of tumors arising in the heart are benign tumors. These tumors can be seen in the atria or ventricles on the left or right side of the heart. Tumors developing in all these chambers can be removed by robotic surgery.

Rhythm disorders: Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia. This disorder can be treated simultaneously during mitral valve surgeries. The energy sources used are radiofrequency and cryoablation.”

prof. Dr. Burak Onan said that the frequently preferred methods in heart valve surgeries are:

“Robotic surgery method can also be performed in heart valve diseases. It can be applied in patients for whom surgery is recommended due to stenosis or insufficiency of the heart valve. Robotic heart valve surgery systems can be used in valve repair, valve replacement, coronary bypass surgery, closure of heart holes and operations of tumors.

Mitral valve repair: Most of the mitral valve diseases may be suitable for repair if detected at an early stage. Especially cases related to structural disorders of the mitral valve, which we call degenerative diseases, are candidates for valve repair. Mitral valve repair operations can be performed with robotic surgery technique. Robotic surgery is a very superior method in this regard.

Mitral valve replacement: A group of mitral valve diseases is not suitable for valve repair or the repair success is low. The valves of these patients need to be replaced with mechanical or biological prostheses. Mechanical and biological valve replacement surgeries with robotic surgery are a safe option.

Performing all these operations with the robotic surgery method provides many advantages to the patient after the operation. Less pain, much less blood usage, less organ disorders, rapid hospital discharge are some of these advantages. It is possible to return to social and business life sooner after the operation.”
