President Tunç Soyer İzmir Agricultural Development Center (İZTAM), established by Karşıyaka Atalik Yamanlar tomatoes grown in the village of Yamanlar are popularized in other districts of İzmir. Within the scope of the Yamanlar tomato survival project, 17 thousand tomato seedlings obtained from ancestral seeds will be donated to 109 villages in 25 districts of İzmir.

Known as heirloom tomato

KarşıyakaNative to Yamanlar Mountain in Turkey, cultivated and protected by the local people, the local Yamanlar tomato is known as an ancestral tomato species that grows at an altitude of 450-850 meters, is resistant to cold, and adapts to the plateau conditions in terms of climatic and physical characteristics.

The fact that Yamanlar tomato cultivation continues for many years provides a high adaptability to regional conditions. In this way, it is known that it is more resistant to agricultural diseases in the region than other tomato varieties.

It is aimed to save water and thus to fight against drought, thanks to the fact that Yamanlar tomatoes, which are grown in high places of the highlands, need less water.

Production capacity will increase

Seed propagation studies of a handful of Ataman Yamanlar tomatoes, which were obtained from a producer in Yamanlar Mountain during the field studies carried out by the İzDoğa team working in İZTAM in 2021, were completed in Bergama last year.

The seeds obtained were turned into seedlings by the Bayındır Flower Producers Agricultural Development Cooperative (BAYÇİKOOP) with the start of the 2023 production season to be distributed to the producers in the highlands of İzmir with suitable altitude and climatic conditions.
It is aimed to increase the production capacity of the producers in the region with 25 thousand seedlings that will be distributed free of charge to the producers and to make the production of Yamanlar tomato, which is an ancestral flavor, become continuous.

Seed production will be carried out in 3 districts

With this pioneering project, producers will be supported in 17 villages in 109 districts of İzmir and on the other hand, ancestral seeds will continue to be multiplied.

In this context, while seed production was carried out only in Bergama last year, it is aimed to produce seeds in Bayındır, Menemen and Bergama districts this year. Thus, it is planned to deliver tomato seedlings to more producers in the next production season.
