With the project, it is aimed to create a “monumental building” that can be seen from all over İzmir in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Republic. “It will be a work of harmony culture”
Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerStating that Izmir is a democracy civilization, he said, “The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Council, which carries the 8500 years of cultural accumulation of this city, is a living civilization heritage with this aspect. We want to bring this unique heritage together with a monumental structure to be built on the site of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Building, which was damaged in the October 30 Earthquake. Because building a monument dedicated to democracy and the centennial of our Republic, whose values we have carried for hundreds of years, is undoubtedly one of the greatest traces we will leave in the future. This is exactly the purpose of this project competition: to give İzmir a monumental structure for the democracy civilization that it created and preserved. I know that this building will be a work of harmony culture nourished by the ancient roots of our city. It will mirror a multi-voiced, multi-colored and very breath-taking life. Our new Parliament Building, which will rise on the ancient roots of Izmir and the hundred-year-old foundations of our Republic, will further increase the democracy civilization through the ages. I hope this monumental work will live for centuries as a democracy square where the will of the citizens is reflected in all decisions regarding our city. I would like to thank all the teams who participated in our competition and who took the responsibility to fulfill this historical responsibility.”
It will be two-stage
With the free, national, two-stage idea project competition, it is expected to develop an imagination about what kind of functions “Izmir's democracy focus” will contain and how to establish its relationship with the people of Izmir, and turn it into a structure proposal.
The winner of the competition will receive 500 thousand TL, the second 400 thousand TL, and the third 300 thousand TL. Five honorable mentions worth 100 thousand TL will be distributed with the competition.
The head of the jury of the competition is architect Nevzat Sayın. The main jury members are Architect Emre Arolat, landscape architect Prof. Dr. Erhan Vecdi KÜÇÜKERBAŞ, architect Ersen GÜRSEL, architect Prof. Dr. Hikmet GÖKMEN, civil engineer, city and regional planner Prof. Dr. İlhan TEKELİ, Civil Engineer, City and Regional Planner, sculptor Prof. Meric HIZAL.
