Cyber security was emphasized this year in the Global Risks Report, in which the World Economic Forum evaluates the risks that await the world in the medium and long term every year. Rapid digitalization at all levels of the business world has made businesses more vulnerable to cyber threats. The latest Global Risks Report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) also proved that cyber security has become one of the worrisome risks of the future. In the 2023th edition of the report, in which WEF shares insights into the risks threatening the world in the short and long term, the title of "pervasive cybercrime and cyber insecurity" was among the top 18 risks.

Sharing his assessments on the subject, Hakan Hintoğlu, General Manager of Berqnet Cyber Security Technologies, said, "As noted in the report, cyber risks seriously threaten not only the business world, but also agriculture, access to water, financial systems, public security, transportation, energy and communication infrastructure." .

The purpose and characteristics of cyber threats have changed

In the Global Security Outlook report published by the World Economic Forum after the Global Risks Report, it was emphasized that the characteristics of cyber threats have changed. In the study, which suggested that respondents thought cyberattacks targeted business disruptions and reputational damage, 43 percent of leaders predicted that a cyberattack would financially impact their organization in the next two years.

Emphasizing that cyber threats have deepened with the addition of global geopolitical instability on top of rapid digitalization, Hakan Hintoğlu said, “The news that an attacker group, which is stated to be financed by the North Korean state, is behind a cyber attack against 3CX, which offers communication systems, reveals the reflections of geopolitical tensions on cyber incidents at first hand. . The priority agenda of the leaders is also shaped in this direction, and the events increasingly affect the way organizations operate and the countries they invest in.

Worries in 2022 continue in 2023

Hakan Hintoğlu, who stated that according to the survey of the global consultancy company PwC, in 2022, 58 percent of CEOs see cyber attacks as very big threats and they are most worried about this issue, Hakan Hintoğlu said, “Even though inflation and macroeconomic fluctuations lead in the 2023 results, in the medium and long term. We see that cyber risks are among the top 5 threats. The way leaders deal with these risks is to strengthen cybersecurity-oriented controls for third parties and develop internal solutions for cyber risk management. Considering that today large enterprises are working with many partners in more than one country, and many enterprises are managing digital transformation projects by making large technology investments, the need for solutions that will respond to cyber risks from end-to-end increases.”
