In the reactor building of the 2nd power unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS), the fourth layer of the inner protection shell (IKK), one of the main elements of the security system of nuclear power plants, was installed.

IKK, consisting of steel coating and special concrete used for sealing the reactor building, ensures the protection of the reactor building.

With an inner radius of 22 meters, a height of 8 meters and a weight of more than 144 tons, it took 3 months to install the layer. The installation was carried out using the Liebherr LTM 13000 truck crane, one of the most powerful Liebherr LR-1300 crawler cranes in the world, and two hydraulic devices. For the installation of the layer, a special traverse was developed that protects the prefabricated structure from deformation during the movement of the crane.

Sergey Butskikh, First Deputy Director General and Director of Construction Works of Akkuyu NPP, which is under construction, said the following about the completed work: “An important element of the reactor building is the inner protection vessel, which consists of structures of different shapes. The fourth layer is the last of the cylindrical structures. Then, the assembly process of the dome, which is planned to be installed this summer, will begin. Our many years of experience saves us time and maximizes the use of available resources. Next, we plan to weld the third and fourth layers, reinforce and assemble the embedded parts, including the transport and personnel lock elements.”

The reactor buildings of the power units at Akkuyu NPP are equipped with double protection shells. The reinforced concrete outer protection shell is designed to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 9, tsunamis, hurricanes and combinations of extreme external factors.
