A freight train car loaded with ammonia overturned at 16:36 on the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railway line in southeastern Serbia. 51 people were poisoned by ammonia released into the air.
According to the Serbian Interior Ministry statement, near the city of Pirot, ammonia was mixed into the air in the wagon of the derailed freight train.
In the statement, it was stated that 51 people were poisoned due to ammonia, and the people of the region were warned not to leave their homes.
Officials said the train with 20 cars was carrying toxic substances from neighboring Bulgaria.
Schools in the region were closed for 1 day
Pirot Mayor Vladan Vasic noted that education will be suspended for one day in schools in the region, where a state of emergency was declared after the accident.
