On December 30, Laba Festival is celebrated in China. With Laba Feast, which is celebrated on the 8th day of December according to the lunar calendar, the countdown begins for Spring Festival, the traditional Chinese new year. Laba porridge is eaten in the Laba Festival, which opens the curtain of the New Year in China.

Laba porridge is a must-eat dish during Laba Feast. The ingredients of laba porridge include red beans, green beans, broad beans, lotus seeds, millet, rice, glutinous rice. Apart from that, according to personal preference, walnuts, chestnuts, jujube, peanuts and raisins can be added to the porridge. All the ingredients are mixed with water and boiled over the fire. Laba porridge is also known as Chinese ashura.

Apart from Laba porridge, local dishes such as Laba garlic (a kind of garlic pickle) and Laba bean curd are also eaten during the feast.

Laba day is known as the day when Buddha was enlightened on the 8th day of December according to the lunar calendar and Buddhism. Temples offer porridge to visitors to celebrate the day. Today, this holiday is continued as a traditional folk habit rather than its religious content.
