The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change continues to work with great devotion to protect the breeding colonies in Tuz Gölü on a regular basis every year for the continuity of the flamingo existence in Turkey. Making a statement to the journalists on the subject, General Director of Conservation of Natural Heritage, Hacı Abdullah Uçan, said that in the past, deaths occurred due to the cut off the clean water coming from the Konya canal to Salt Lake for agricultural use, but thanks to the measures taken by the Ministry, there was a significant increase in the number of offspring this year. Uçan said, “All kinds of measures are meticulously taken by our Ministry to increase water and transport water resources.”

Hacı Abdullah Uçan, General Manager of the Protection of Natural Assets of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, made a statement to the journalists at the ministry regarding the flamingo bird habitat in the Tuz Gölü Special Environmental Protection Area.

General Manager Hacı Abdullah Uçan stated that necessary measures have been taken for the flamingos around Salt Lake for shelter, feeding and reproduction.

In his statement, Uçan said that the Salt Lake Special Environmental Protection Area Wetland is one of the most important bird breeding areas in Turkey.

Emphasizing that Tuz Gölü is the largest natural breeding ground in the world for flamingos, known as "the six cranes" in the public, Uçan said, with the instruction of Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, that the ministry regularly breeds in Tuz Gölü every year for the continuation of the existence of flamingos. He stated that the work for the protection of the colonies is carried on with devotion.

Pointing out that flamingos use the lakes around Tuz Gölü for breeding, feeding and sheltering, Uçan continued as follows:

“Flamingo chicks that come out of the hatching complete their development with the water and nutrients coming from the canal called Konya canal during the development period. In the past, some flamingo deaths occurred due to the interruption of the clean water coming to Salt Lake from the Konya canal for agricultural purposes. However, with the measures taken by our ministry, a significant increase was observed in the number of flamingo cubs this year. Due to seasonal normals, there is a shortage of water in the channel feeding the lake. This causes the water to decrease in the puddles on the edge of the lake where the flamingo cubs nest, thus causing the fry to be dehydrated. All kinds of measures are taken by our Ministry to increase water and ensure that water resources reach the lake.”

Uçan reported that warnings were given to the relevant ministries and municipalities in order not to cut off the water coming from the Konya canal for agricultural irrigation without permission.

Expressing that they have taken all kinds of precautions, Uçan said, “Our teams in the region carry out the necessary inspections without interruption. This year, our ministry has taken the necessary measures with all service units to avoid any negativity.” said.

Uçan added that the people of the region, relevant institutions and non-governmental organizations should be sensitive and do their part for the continuation of the ecosystem of the region.
