It was built by the French engineer Eugene-Henri Gavand, with the permission and edict of Sultan Abdülhamit, the sultan of the period. Tünel, which is still in service today, came up with an idea when Gavand, who came to Istanbul as a tourist in 1867, observed the difficulty of people climbing the Yüksekkaldırım slope. This vehicle, which is seen as the innovative technology of the period, still helps thousands of people.
In the Ottoman Empire, which entered the period of collapse, Sultan Abdulaziz packed dozens of works and public services into his 15-year rule. One of them, Tünel or Karaköy – Beyoğlu Historical Tunel Funicular Line, is one of the funicular lines in Istanbul.
The line, which is the world's second oldest and Turkey's first underground rail public transportation system after the London subway, which was put into service in 1863, and which was put into service on January 17, 1875, covers the 573-meter route between Karaköy and Beyoğlu in approximately 102 seconds 07.00 – The line, which runs every 22.45 minutes at peak hours between 5 hours, carries 300 thousand passengers with an average of 24 daily trips.
Since it was necessary to climb the Yüksekkaldırım Slope, which has a very steep slope of 24 percent, to reach Beyoğlu from Karaköy, getting out from here was tiring people. In this context, one of the railway concessions given in 1869 to improve the urban transportation of Istanbul was given for the Tunnel, which was built to facilitate the transportation between these two points. The Tunnel, which was 1871 meters long, was put into service on January 573, 17, after three years of construction. Tunnel, which switched to electrical system in 1875, was transferred to IETT in 1910. Tünel was completely renovated by a French company in 1939 and underwent a comprehensive overhaul in 1970.
