Üsküdar Dental Hospital Periodontology Specialist Dr. Lecturer Member Kübra Güler made explanations about in what situations and how mouthwashes should be used.
"Teeth should not be brushed before and after gargling."
Mentioning how to use mouthwashes, which are frequently preferred by those who care about their dental care, Periodontology Specialist Dr. Lecturer Member Kübra Güler said, “A measure of mouthwash is put into the mouth and shaken for half a minute, then spit out. You should not brush your teeth for half an hour before and after. Because some mouthwashes interact with toothpastes and their effectiveness may decrease as a result of this interaction.” said.
"Mouthwash should not be used routinely"
Pointing out that mouthwash should not be used for bad breath or cleaning between teeth, Güler said, “Mouthwash is not a product that should be used routinely and can never replace tooth brushing, dental floss or oral irrigator use. "Mouthwash should be used if the physician prescribes it in individuals who are very prone to caries formation or in patients with severe gum problems." he said.
"Swallowing large amounts may be life-threatening"
Stating that mouthwash may cause problems that may negatively affect health if swallowed, Güler said that if a small amount is swallowed, burning in the stomach and nausea may occur. Güler stated that if large amounts such as 5-6 caps are swallowed, a hospital should be contacted immediately and warned that swallowing too much could be life-threatening.
Stating that the gums can also be affected by mouthwash, Güler said, "Using it for longer than 1-2 weeks may disrupt the balance of oral microorganisms and cause the emergence of different diseases, as well as cause loss of taste or a bad taste in the mouth." said.
"Thyme juice or warm water with little salt can also soothe gums."
Reiterating the warning that mouthwashes should not be used unless recommended by a physician, Güler said, “Mouthwashes should be obtained according to the physician's recommendation and used for as long as the physician recommends. Mouthwash should be kept in the mouth for about 30 seconds and rinsed. Instead of commercial products, thyme juice or warm water with little salt can be preferred. Gargling in this way can also soothe the gums.” He concluded his words by saying.
