Three New Environmental and Sustainability-Focused Steps from the Northern Marmara Motorway

The Northern Marmara Highway gave the start of three new projects within the scope of World Environmental Protection Week. KMO, which will contribute to the education of individuals with autism by recycling electronic waste, also eliminates the sound pollution in the region with the new noise barrier located in Akfırat.

The Northern Marmara Motorway continues to undertake a series of projects within the scope of its new sustainability vision and updated environmental policies. Focusing on the environment and sustainability from all business processes and corporate social responsibility areas, the Northern Marmara Highway brought together contribution to recycling, noise pollution prevention and green practices with three new projects it started with the World Environmental Protection Week.

KMO started the project of recycling electronic waste at 5 points in order to support and contribute to the education of people with autism. The Northern Marmara Highway, which cooperates with the GCL Group for the recycling of e-waste, will donate the income from electronic wastes to TODEV to support the education and development of individuals with autism. Electronic waste collected at KMO Main Control Center, 3 Maintenance Operations Directorates and KMO Istanbul Park OHT Station, which is designated as a pilot area for highway users, will be recycled by GCL and reintroduced to the industry. Thus, every recycled electronic waste will be a new hope for the education of individuals with autism.

The Northern Marmara Highway, which also hosts one of Turkey's first ecological bridges, creates a barrier to sound pollution caused by vehicle traffic in the living areas around the 415-kilometer-long transportation corridor. The environmentally friendly Noise Barrier, which is made of end-of-life tires, was first applied in the KMO Akfırat area. The Noise Barrier, built by KMO in cooperation with HATKO, has been specially developed so that highway traffic does not cause sound pollution to residential areas. In the Noise Barrier project, end-of-life tires are used in the form of main granules, while minimizing the waste rate, detecting and preventing pollution at the source, using energy resources efficiently and reducing the negative effects on the environment.

The green environmental policies of the Northern Marmara Motorway, which spreads its activities in the field of sustainability to all management and operation processes, are also appreciated abroad. The Asia-Pacific Economic and Social Commission (ESCAP) within the United Nations (UN) awarded KMO the Asia-Pacific Green Deal Badge as part of its environmental policies and sustainable development efforts. While the Northern Marmara Motorway succeeded in making its mark among the companies committed to sustainable practices by ESCAP, it will continue to take part in environment-oriented projects with the synergy it has achieved with international institutions and organizations in the coming period.
