Şehir Hatları AŞ, one of the subsidiary companies of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), started Zero Waste implementation at the designated pilot piers and ships this year. Within the scope of the application, Şehir Hatları AŞ, Moda Ship and Kabataş It will support sustainability by placing waste sorting boxes on the Pier.

As part of the efforts for environmental protection and a sustainable future, maintenance and renewal of sewage/sewage water collection, storage, discharge and electrical monitoring systems were carried out on all City Lines ships. With this practice, wastewater is directed to waste collection centers without mixing with the sea, and a temporary waste collection and holding area has been created at the Golden Horn Shipyard. As a result of these efforts, Şehir Hatları was awarded the zero waste certificate for the first time.

As a C40 city, Istanbul aims to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050. In this context, Şehir Hatları AŞ started to work within the scope of the vision project for the decarbonization of the Istanbul Sea. In the feasibility report prepared in cooperation with the World Bank; Rehabilitation of the lines, propulsion systems of ships, battery capacities, pier infrastructures and charging station needs, ship types and capacities will determine how many more ships will be needed. The feasibility report is expected to be completed in December 2023.

“The most important legacy for future generations: A clean and livable Istanbul”

Sinem Dedetaş, General Manager of Şehir Hatları AŞ, made the following statements on the subject:

“As City Lines, we continue our commitment to fulfill our responsibility in environmental sustainability. In this context, we aim to reduce our environmental impact and minimize carbon emissions within the scope of the Decarbonization Project we have implemented. We have initiated various practices in order to encourage the use of sustainable and clean energy sources in maritime transportation. In this context, we expanded the IMM Sea Taxi project, which we launched in 2021, with the sustainable environmentalist Hybrid Sea Taxi with the vision of decarbonization. With the transition to the hybrid system, we anticipate a 25 percent reduction in the fuel consumption of the existing diesel Sea Taxi and the five Hybrid Sea Taxi will reduce the annual carbon footprint of 284 tons. We are also placing waste sorting boxes on our ships and piers with the Zero Waste target that we started as a pilot this year. These efforts will not only be limited to our ships and piers, but we will also strive to raise environmental awareness in society and to be a pioneer in this regard. While celebrating the World Environment Day, as Şehir Hatları AŞ, we are committed to continue to develop our environmentally friendly practices and to lead the way in sustainability. We will continue to work meticulously to leave a clean and livable Istanbul as the most important legacy for future generations.”
