Is Scoop on Netflix based on a true story?
Scoop is based on a shocking true story from 2012, when crime reporter Jigna Vora was accused of involvement in the murder of a respected journalist named Jyotirmoy Dey (also known as J Dey). Scoop creator Hansal Mehta was inspired by the case and Vora's 2019 memoir, Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison.
Vora was believed to have conspired with members of the Chota Rajan gang responsible for killing Dey in 2011. He spent seven years behind bars until he was finally acquitted and cleared of all charges in 2018. Behind Bars in Byculla, which formed the basis of the Netflix series.
Regarding the production of the show, Mehta said:
As a filmmaker, my goal is always to tell stories that go beyond a weekend. On Scoop, I found this: a story that is urgently appealing to our post-truth times. Collaborating with someone as talented as Mrunmaye brought a sensibility that deeply enriched the show.
