Firefighter Serdar Bıçakçı, who is in charge of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, opened the door of his house with his wife Cansu Bıçakçı to the dog that was rescued from the rubble in Gaziantep. The Bıçakçı family, affected by the Izmir earthquake in 2020, reconnected the little pup they named Ateş to life with love and attention.
While the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues to heal the wounds in the cities hit by the earthquake, it also takes care of the unclaimed lives in the destroyed cities. Serdar Bıçakçı, who said that they wanted to adopt an animal before, but did not dare to do so, said, “The earthquake affected all of us deeply. We saw small creatures trapped there as well as humans. "People forgot about these creatures out of the rush of life," he said. Bicakci, who embraced Ateş, who was left homeless and unattended in Gaziantep, where great destruction was experienced, said, “My friends, who heard that I wanted to adopt a dog, brought Ateş to İzmir. After coming here, all maintenance was done by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Veterinary Affairs Branch Directorate.
“Save Our Lives”
Serdar Bıçakçı, who stated that his 4-year-old son Sercan Bıçakçı also embraced Ateş, said, “My son used to tell his teacher every day when he went to daycare. He says that our guest came from the earthquake. She takes care of him every morning before he goes to school and when he comes back from school. The fire not only attracted the attention of us, but the people of the whole neighborhood. Our friends loved it here. Everyone is more sensitive because they come from the earthquake region," he said. Bicakci emphasized that there are many lives in Pako Stray Animals Social Life Campus and it is important to protect them.

Cansu Bıçakçı, on the other hand, emphasized that they were very excited and said, “I love animals very much, but I was not very keen on keeping animals at home. But when the fire came, we felt very good. Good with us. We believe it will bring us luck. We are very happy,” he said.
