Actress Sharon Stone says one of her most famous roles resulted in her losing custody of her son in 2004.

Stone said in a podcast that her famous flash in 1992 Basic Instinct distorted perceptions about her.

“You know your mom makes sex movies?” Stone remembered that the judge had asked his four-year-old son.

The backlash from the scene, where she briefly exposes herself by crossing her legs, made her avoid similar roles, she says.

Stone and her then-husband Ron Bronstein adopted their son Roan in 2000. But when the couple divorced in 2004, the judge awarded custody to Mr Bronstein.

On the Table for Two podcast, host Bruce Bozzi told Stone that the loss caused him serious heartache.

“I stayed at the Mayo Clinic with extra heartbeats in the upper and lower chambers of my heart,” Stone said. “Literally broke my heart.”

Stone said her treatment after the hit movie was brutal, considering how much sex and nudity is appearing on TV today.

“Maybe you've seen my probable nudity in one-16th of a second,” Stone said. “And I lost custody of my child.”

Stone said that other people in Hollywood are judging her for her role as novelist Catherine Tramell, who seduces a police detective played by Michael Douglas in the erotic thriller.

“I was nominated for a Golden Globe for this role, and when I went to the Golden Globes and they said my name, a bunch of people in the room laughed,” Stone said.

“I was so humiliated,” he said. “Anybody have any idea how hard it is to play that role? How heartbreaking and scary” was I like?

Stone said she now avoids roles that portray women as having a sexualized light or dark personalities. However, he added that fans should not confuse the actors with their characters.

“The guy who plays Jeffery Dahmer – nobody thinks he's a man-eater,” Stone said. “This makes him a very complex person who has taken on an incredibly difficult role.”
