New Changes Happened in China's 'Abyss Village'

There is a village in the cliff in the Liangshan mountains of Sichuan province in southwest China. The settlement area on the 800-meter cliff is called “Abyss Village”.

The villagers had to use the hanging stairs on the side of the mountain to get out of the village. Every day, the students were trying to reach their schools, face to face with death by descending this suspended staircase, which had no security measures.

Noticing this dangerous road, the authorities built a new and safer staircase in the village in 2016.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has asked about the latest status of the “Abyss Village” during the Two Meetings every year since 2017. President Xi said, “I am heartbroken that the villagers are going out under such difficult conditions.” said. Xi Jinping learned about the current situation of the village and villagers from the local delegates who attended the Two Meetings. President Xi stressed that the peasants should be completely lifted out of poverty and the economy of remote rural areas should be expanded.

In the past years, the suspended stairs of the “Abyss Village” have turned into a staircase made of safe steel construction, and today, real stairs made of steel and concrete.

Some of the residents of “Abyss Village” were evacuated to their new homes, while the remaining residents developed village tourism.
