Poet Nazım Hikmet was commemorated at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center (AASSM) on the 121st anniversary of his birth. Nazım Hikmet and Yannis Ritsos, who translated his poems into Greek, were commemorated together at the Nazım Hikmet-Ritsos Meeting, hosted by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and organized by the International Cultural Federation 21st Century and the Intercultural Art Association. Explaining that Yannis Ritsos and Nazım Hikmet are two great folk poets who fought for peace and freedom throughout their lives, Soyer said: “These struggles that bind them together have also inspired and reinforced the friendship of the Turkish and Greek people for hundreds of years. The Greek people were inspired by Nazım, and the Turkish people by Yannis for solidarity, freedom, independence and peace. The struggle against fascism, autocracy and the juntas became gigantic in the verses of two poets. That's why these two giant plane trees are indelibly etched in the memory of the Turkish and Greek people. We give the best answer to those who have tried to turn the Turkish and Greek people against each other over the years, by commemorating the friendship of these two folk poets. While we remember the poems, struggles and ancient friendships of Yannis and Nazım, what power can disrupt the friendship of the Turkish and Greek peoples? It goes without saying, but there are more reasons that unite us than the reasons that separate us. That's why we agree with each other."
President Soyer concluded his speech by reading the lines Yannis Ritsos wrote for Nazım Hikmet, “Freedom is one of your names / It is your most beautiful name / Hello Nâzım”.

After the speeches, the poems of two great poets were read.
