Peugeot Inception Concept Unveiled at CES in Las Vegas

The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT was showcased for the first time at the “Peugeot Brand Forward” event at the CES Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The digital presentation on the future of the brand included Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson, Peugeot Design Director Matthias Hossann, Peugeot Product Director Jérôme Micheron and Peugeot Marketing and Communications Director Phil York.

The Latin nomenclature "Inceptio", meaning "Beginning", sums up the manifesto that marks the beginning of a new era for Peugeot. PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT offers unique technological perspectives with its visionary design and opens the doors of a privileged automotive experience. PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT takes you to a new dimension between dream and reality; it evokes intense emotions the moment you approach, touch or ride it. The target is for the innovations it contains to enter mass production to a large extent by 2025. PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT embodies the automotive vision of the future by responding to the expectations of customers who seek more pleasure and are open to new technologies. New generation customers want more connected electric vehicles with more range, easy access to charging, and a brand that offers software-integrated connectivity to plan journeys through a simple interface. In the next 2 years, 5 new all-electric models will be introduced to the market. It will then have an all-electric range, and by 2030 all Peugeot cars sold in Europe will be electric.

Linda Jackson, Peugeot CEO, said: “PEUGEOT is fully committed to electrifying its product line. Starting next year, all vehicles in the product range will be electrically assisted. In the next two years, we will introduce five new all-electric models to the market. Our goal is simple: by 2030 we will make Peugeot Europe's leading electric brand. This ambitious vision means a radical transformation for the brand. The beginning of a new era comes into being with the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT. While Peugeot promises that the world will be a better place with its motto 'Glamorous', PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT embodies this discourse.

PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT

"Peugeot is changing, but the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT remains unmistakably a Peugeot," said Matthias Hossann, Peugeot Design Manager. It expresses the brand's immortal cat appeal and shows how positive we are about the future of the automobile and the emotions it provides. Shining and sparkling, the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT reinterprets the spatial experience of driving, while showing our thoughts on reducing Peugeot's carbon footprint by more than 2030% by 50. The transformation of the brand concerns all aspects of future Peugeot design, production and life. Design is an integral part of this transformation.”

“The excellence of the new STLA “BEV-by-design” platforms is the foundation of a revolution”

The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT was designed with one of four future Stellantis Group “BEV-by-design” platforms. This new platform series will be available from 2023 and will revolutionize future Peugeot models. The STLA Grand Platform, which forms the basis of the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT, enables an efficient sedan silhouette with a length of 5,00 m and a height of only 1,34 m. The dimension in question has been deliberately chosen to highlight the innovations of this manifesto. The platform is also part of Peugeot's new official design language, which goes hand in hand with its brand DNA. New “BEV-by-design” electrical platforms powered by artificial intelligence; It also includes technological modules such as STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit and STLA Autodrive. The all-electric PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT is equipped with 800V technology. The 100 kWh battery allows you to travel 800 km from Paris to Marseille or from Brussels to Berlin on a single charge. Its consumption is quite assertive with only 100 kWh per 12,5 km. The battery allows charging equivalent to a range of 30 km in one minute or 150 km in five minutes. The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT can be charged wirelessly, thus providing added convenience.

With two compact electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT transforms into a dynamically driven all-wheel drive vehicle. Total power is approximately 680 HP (500kW). It takes less than 0 seconds for the vehicle to accelerate from 100-3 km / h. The excellent platform enables Steer-by-Wire technology. With this technology, digital electrical controls replace mechanical connections. With Hypersquare control, the decades-old steering wheel becomes history.

PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT

“The cat eye for a new design language”

At first eye contact, a Peugeot is immediately recognizable by its cat stance. The genes of the brand are the same, but the codes have been reinterpreted for the new era. This new design language will be used in new Peugeot models from 2025. Simpler and more elegant lines have details worthy of the digital world. In the new design, vibrant and striking lines alternate between more geometric and sharper athletic lines such as the horizontal shoulder line. The challenge of the design of the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT lies in the contrast between a dynamic profile for the cat stance and the passenger compartment, the glass capsule that extends in front of the feet of the driver and front passenger. From the side, the design, which carries Peugeot's stylish and elegant sedan codes, guides the near future of electric cars designed on special platforms with a bird's eye view. The magic of the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT lies in the seamless transition between exterior and interior design with its special glazing.

Smart glass: the passengers of the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT are at the center of the 7,25 m2 glass area, which contributes to the bold design. All windows (Windshield, side windows and corner windows) are made of glass designed for architecture. Adapted to the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT, this technology retains its thermal qualities. It utilizes a chromium treatment (Metal oxide treatment) originally applied by NASA to the visor of astronauts' helmets. The NARIMA® glass in question has a warm reflection in yellow tones and a cooler reflection in blue tones. This glass surface creates an elegant link between the exterior and interior. On the outside, it is reflected in the neutral body color. Inside, it emits flashes of light, constantly changing reflections and color tones. PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT passengers enjoy a new experience in terms of color and material, while the treatment of chromed glass solves the thermal and anti-UV problem.

Exclusive body colour: The body color of the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT consists of very fine metal pigments and is single-layered. This means that much less energy is consumed during the application.

A special front fascia, the “Fusion Mask”: The front bumper adopts an all-new Peugeot light signature, which includes three symbolic claws. This new, highly distinctive façade combines the entire front grille, signature part and sensors into a single mask. This single-volume mask consists of a single piece of glass with a logo in the middle, magnified with a 3D luminescent effect. The mask is covered by three thin horizontal bars through which three claws cross. Four optical modules are placed under the glass mask printed with INKJET digital technology, which has a mirror effect applied to it.

Communicating doors: A TECH BAR runs horizontally through the door layer. This flat screen sends different messages to the outside of the vehicle when the driver and passengers approach. PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT's artificial intelligence can adjust the comfort settings (seat position, temperature, driving mode and infotainment preferences) that each passenger desires. In addition to the battery charge level, TECH BAR also gives welcome and farewell messages.

PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT

Technical façade: PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT presents a user-friendly and practical structure with its movable body element in front of the huge windshield. This small hatch provides access to the Aero Tech Deck area, where the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT's electric vehicle maintenance functions, including the charging socket and charge monitoring, are located.

Aerodynamic wheels: The “AERORIM” wheels on the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT perfectly combine aerodynamics and aesthetics. They are designed with an axial symmetry, just like the 408-inch wheels of the new Peugeot 20. Forged textile inserts contribute to aerodynamics, while micro-perforated aluminum inserts highlight the high-tech aspect of the design. The Luminous Lion logo stays put when the wheel is turned. The brake caliper is covered with mirror glass. This interesting design echoes the design of the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT with Hypersquare glass areas on the front and rear.

“Revolution in i-Cockpit® with Hypersquare”

More than 9 million i-Cockpit® rides on the road today. This new cockpit architecture with its ergonomic innovations appeared 10 years ago with the first generation Peugeot 208. With the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT, the i-Cockpit® comes to life again. By removing the steering wheel and classic controls, the designers turned to an entirely new architecture. The all-digital Hypersquare control system inspired by video games brings the i-Cockpit® concept invented by Peugeot into the future.

Next-generation i-Cockpit: The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT offers agile driving capabilities with new Hypersquare control and an enhanced in-car experience with the new, more intuitive i-Cockpit®. All driving parameters can be controlled with the fingertip. Steer-by-wire technology makes driving like a video game, but more instinctive and simple in real life. Replacing the classic steering wheel, Hypersquare's superior ergonomics creates a new, natural, simpler and safer way of driving. New controls provide a completely new level of driving pleasure and unparalleled driving comfort.

“The next generation i-Cockpit includes the Stellantis STLA Smart Cockpit technology platform”

HYPERSQUARE combined with HALO CLUSTER: The Hypersquare control system is combined with a flexible screen that displays 360° driving or infotainment information in the background. This HALO CLUSTER notifies passengers approaching the vehicle with its circular display. This outward communication reinforces the concept of sharing and a new automotive vision. During the transition to the L4 driving authorization level (STLA AutoDrive), the HYPERSQUARE retracts and a large panoramic screen emerges from the floor to offer a new cabin experience. PEUGEOT's goal is to introduce the Hypersquare system in a new generation of vehicles in its range before the end of this decade.

Steer-by-Wire: Before developing the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT, the brand tested and integrated Steer-by-Wire technology to maximize its rideability, safety and reliability. This eliminates the physical steering column.

PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT

“New driving experience, increased sensations and more comfort”

The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT offers a new interior vision for a Grand Tourer. It also allows for new, longer seating positions as a result of the new "BEV-by-design" architecture specific to electric vehicles. The high shoulder line reinforces the sense of security. The front seats offer an outstanding view. The second row has a better view of the outside world, thanks to generous glass areas and new seat proportions. Glass areas behind the front seats provide rear seat passengers with their own atmosphere and adjustment zone. Every material in the cabinet has been processed for reflection. Thus, the interior color changes according to the environment and light. The interior offers a high level of space and comfort.

Immersive seats: All seat proportions have been reworked for greater width and an immersive comfort experience. With the Comfort Fit solution, the seat adapts to the body shape of each passenger. The architecture and frame of the chair has a design close to the body shape. It's no longer a matter of sitting in a car seat, but settling in a new piece of furniture adapted to dynamic driving conditions or relaxing when authorized to drive. PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT's magnificently proportioned seats offer a comfortable stance with headrests suitable for the user's body. Seats positioned low allow this new space-saving architecture.

No more dashboard: In the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT, all interior elements are placed lower. Unlike the seats, the minimal cockpit, which retracts when authorized to drive, has a completely driver-oriented architecture. There will no longer be a dashboard, a horizontal bar or a heat wall. With a completely open field of view, passengers can see and experience more. This maximizes the in-cab emotional experience.

FOCAL Premium HiFi: The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT is equipped with the Premium HiFi system, signed by the French audio system specialist FOCAL, providing high-end audio experiences. The specially adjusted positions of the speakers provide unparalleled in-cab sound reproduction. The system consists of an amplifier and several soundbars, each with 100mm coaxial speakers located in the doors and front of the cabinet. There are also two subwoofers on the floor. The joint work of the two brands is shown with the “PEUGEOT-FOCAL” logo on the grille of the soundbars.

“Durable materials”

Turning PEUGEOT into an electric brand involves more than just putting batteries and electric motors in cars. The interior of the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT reflects extensive research into transforming the in-car experience. Black is not used in this architecture. New atmospheres are created by the combination of light filtered by multi-chrome glass and materials with neutral metallic hues. The cabin atmosphere completely changes with the reflections created. The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT showcases the brand's new techniques to reduce its carbon footprint in Europe by more than 2030% by 50 and become fully Carbon Net Zero by 2038.

Molded textiles: 100% polyester fabric scraps from the design center's prototype workshops or suppliers are reused and heat-compressed under vacuum with an injected bond in the form of welding resin. This technology produces an extremely hard and durable material that can be made into a carrier or trim piece. It can be used in areas such as door sills and does not require cladding with additional parts. The task of the design is to make these previously invisible parts visible.

Raw galvanized steel: Even if electrified, the idea here was to display the car in its raw form to limit the number of components in the passenger compartment, based on the principle that a car will always consist of a minimum of 50% steel. This approach is applied in console or seat structures. The steel is processed with a galvanizing method, such as an anti-corrosion zinc bath, which provides a raw aesthetic reflection. As with the copper used in the Onyx concept car 10 years ago, it's part of the DNA to evoke raw materials.

Velvet meets 3D printing: The seats and floor are covered in a very special velvet made entirely of recycled polyester with a very metallic sheen to play with the light emitted by the glass capsule. This is a completely recycled material. 3D patterns are then printed to act as floor mats. The continuity between the seats and the floor is provided by a single material. 3D printing on this stretch fabric produced in collaboration with STRATASYS is revolutionary and fully recyclable.

Air Quilting® Mat: The comfort of the seats is supported by adjustable mattresses in the shoulder area. This electrically sourced, single-material, easy-to-recycle upholstery derives from the inflatable pockets extracted from classic seats. This normally invisible pocket is processed with a metallic effect for integration with the seats. It strengthens shoulder support and allows seat comfort to be increased tenfold on demand, depending on driving style. Making the hidden visible provides more simplicity, fewer parts and more comfort at the end of the day.
