The Negative Reaction to the Report Card Is Harming the Child More Than Realized

Yeditepe University Faculty of Education Dean Prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun made suggestions to students and parents who received report cards. "The report card should be seen by families at home as a means of supporting the development of the student," said Prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun said, “The report card is a tool for students to know themselves and their potential. It is a concrete indicator that shows both the student and the parent how much work should be done for which course. Labeling the student with negative qualities, comparing them with their peers and giving punishments defeat the purpose of monitoring and supporting the progress of the report card. Due to such reactions to the report card, students' negative attitudes towards learning and evaluation may harm their academic development more than it is thought.

Emphasizing that students' perception of success may be different from that of their parents, Coşkun said, “For this reason, parents should talk to their children about success. How does he define success? What are the criteria for success or failure? Learning this can be critical for evaluating the report card and setting new goals.”

Noting that setting goals for children and adolescents is very important in achieving academic and social success, Yelkin Diker Coşkun stated that the report card also helps children set academic goals for themselves. prof. Dr. Coşkun continued his words as follows:

“Realizing these goals in line with their own plans is the first step towards academic and social success. In this regard, parents should act together with their children and support them in setting goals. Goals must be created together with the students. Children should be encouraged by families to set goals that fit their potential. For example, it is necessary to understand how he sees his grade for a course and to make a study plan about what he needs to do in order to turn it into a higher grade, that is, it is necessary to motivate the student.”

Noting that the school is a place where academic success and even more social development take place, Coşkun emphasized that report cards should also be evaluated in this sense. prof. Dr. Coşkun said, “It is necessary to evaluate what the school adds to the students holistically. Establishing success targets in arts, sports and other areas of development will be very valuable for student personality development.

prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun pointed out the importance of students who have completed the course period to spend the holiday productively. Coşkun said, “In this way, we can prepare for the second term in a healthier way. It should be a time when activities such as vacation, rest, games, short trips are planned in a balanced way. It will be beneficial to create opportunities for students to participate in activities that support personal development, such as reading books, going to the theater or going to the cinema.
