Preparations for the Second Century Economics Congress in Izmir Continue

Preparations continue for the Second Century Economics Congress, which will be held by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality between 15-21 February 2023. Speaking at the expert meeting titled “We Are Returning to Our Nature”, President Soyer stated that they set out to put forward visions and perspectives for the future by taking nature into account and to tell the world something from İzmir, “Atatürk did not give the parliament the task of organizing the economics congress. He held a civil convention. If we live in İzmir, this is our historical responsibility”.

The preparatory meetings of the Second Century Economics Congress, which will be held by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality between February 15-21, 2023, continue for six months without interruption, with the Expert Meetings, the second phase. The second of the meetings, the first of which was held under the title of "We are satisfied with each other", was held by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor with the call "We are returning to our nature". Tunç SoyerIt started with the hosting of Many academics and experts from many parts of Turkey working on climate crisis, ecology and development in harmony with nature attended the meeting held at İzmir Agricultural Development Center (İZTAM).

“We did not focus on shallow political conflicts”

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, in the centennial of the Economics Congress, said that they set out to hold the Economics Congress of the Second Century. Expressing that he has very concrete goals on the way, the President Tunç Soyer“We are not seeking solutions to today's political problems. We set out to determine the economic policies of the future in today's political climate. In today's political climate, we did not focus on political polarizations, shallow political conflicts. We wanted all of this to happen in a climate where we are outside of them and we are outside of them.”

“To put forward a vision for the world of the future is a work that has not been done”

Stating that no one has done such a study, Soyer said, “There is no political party that does this work. There is no political organization that thinks about it. Preparing for the world of the future like a century ago and putting forward a vision for the world of the future is a work that is rarely done. We thought that the Economics Congress was the basis for this,” he said.

“We need to share dreams”

Emphasizing that there is a need to unite dreams and that this is one of the reasons for starting the journey, the President Tunç Soyer“We need to dream. We thought that we needed to put forward visions and perspectives for the future. That's what we set out for. Moreover, there was no nature at the table where workers, farmers, industrialists, and merchants were present a century ago.

We cannot build a future by leaving the nature issue out of the study. The common denominator of all of us is to dream at that table by taking nature into account. To present a vision and perspective for the future. Because the dirty footprint left by human beings on this earth has already exceeded the self-renewal threshold of nature. This situation is being talked about, discussed and a solution is sought all over the world. But can we say something from Anatolia that will inspire the world? That was another concern. First; What can we say about the future of the country outside the political climate? What can we think? Revealing these and establishing common dreams. Secondly, it is not only limited to Anatolia, what can we say to the world from here, what can we get out of it? Worry about these. We set out with these two main ideas,” he said.

Atatürk did not give this task to the parliament.

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerMentioning the importance of hosting such a congress, “We decided to embark on this journey a year ago. I also presented this to our esteemed governor. We said that we will do this work and that we are ready to do our part in case they think of doing another work. I said that there was an assembly a hundred years ago, but Mustafa Kemal Atatürk did not assign that assembly. Atatürk brought together 135 delegates from all over Turkey and asked them to work. Civil initiative tried to build common sense. We will do the same in Izmir. If we live in İzmir, this is our historical responsibility. And that's how we went on that journey. There is news of these works that we will do from the beginning. We didn't cover anything up. We did it by declaring the opposite and trying to make it known.”
