In the 1st Power Unit of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS), the protection cycle was completed by placing the inner protection shell (IKK) dome in its design position.

Anastasia Zoteeva, General Manager of AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş said: “Although 2022 was a difficult year, it was a very successful and productive year! As planned, on New Year's Eve we completed the installation of the inner protection shell dome, which is an important step in the construction of the 1st Power Unit. To the whole team; I am grateful to each builder, each supervisor for their maximum commitment to the project, their adherence to deadlines, their high quality work, their dedication to our construction site and nuclear power plant that we consider our home. Together, we are passing through an important turning point. Every year we connect more and more, we understand each other better. Our team is the strongest and most productive team! We are approaching the delivery of fresh nuclear fuel to the Akkuyu NPP site, which is the most important event of the coming year. For the centennial anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, we plan to complete the outer shell and other acceptance work before the completion of Unit 1.”

The IKK dome, which is hemispherical and weighs 215 tons, consists of 16 assembly sections. The dome also includes a 46-tonne steel structure for sprinkler system service platforms. A 62-ton traverse was specially designed and produced to lift the dome to a height of approximately 75 meters. Lifted by the Liebherr LR 13000 crane, the total weight of the structure was 340 tons. Making the dome suitable for assembly was carried out at Akkuyu NPP site and took 3,5 months.

After the concrete of the dome part of the IKK, the final phase of the construction and assembly works of the outer protection shell will begin.

Construction and installation work at the Akkuyu NPP site continues at all main and auxiliary facilities, including the four power units, coastal hydrotechnical structures, power distribution system, administrative buildings, training center and NPP physical protection facilities. All stages of construction at the Akkuyu NPP site are closely followed by independent inspection organizations and the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NDK), the national regulatory agency.
