Ayas Tomato, Bingol Honey, Bursa Peach, Ezine Cheese, Huyuk Strawberry, Isparta Rose Oil, Kilis Olive Oil, Manisa Mesir Paste, Rize Tea and Urla Gum Artichoke… All these flavors of Turkey will be under effective international protection.

Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) has applied for registration to the European Commission for 10 geographically indicated products. With the completion of the processes, 10 more known and loved flavors in various regions of Turkey will have received international registration.

Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank stated that they started an international geographical indication mobilization and said, “We will increase the number of geographical indications to 100 in the EU.” said. Noting that the number of registered geographical indications in Turkey has exceeded 300, Minister Varank said, "Now we need to focus on the registration and promotion of these products at an international level." he said.

REGIONAL AND COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL BALANCE

Varank stated that there are 8 products registered in the name of Turkey in the EU, and that the number will increase to 9 with the Antakya Kunefe, whose processes are still ongoing, and said, “We need to increase these figures quickly when we consider the potential of our country.” said. Stating that they pay attention to the geographical indications from 7 regions of Turkey in the applications to the EU, Varank said, "Besides, we also consider the commercial potential of the products." he said.

IN TURKISH PATENT COORDINATION

In accordance with the EU Regulation, geographical indication applications can be made directly by the organizations registered at the national level on behalf of producer groups, as well as through TÜRKPATENT. While TÜRKPATENT previously provided technical support to the applications made by producer groups, this time it completed all necessary preparations in close cooperation and coordination with producer groups.

MASS APPLICATION ON JANUARY 5

TÜRKPATENT made a collective geographical indication application to the European Union Commission on January 2022 for 10 geographical indication products for which the application preparations were completed in the last months of 5. With these 10 applications, the number of applications whose proceedings are ongoing in the EU has increased to 42.

8 PRODUCT REGISTERED

The 8 products previously registered with the EU are as follows: Antep Baklava, Aydın Fig, Aydın Chestnut, Bayramiç White, Giresun Chubby Hazelnut, Malatya Apricot, Milas Olive Oil and Taşköprü Garlic.

PUBLISHED IN THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE

Geographical indication applications made to the EU Commission are published in the EU Official Gazette, after the necessary evaluations, if the Commission finds the application appropriate. After the 3-month objection period, the geographical indications are registered with the EU. The qualified preparation of the applications and the rapid completion of the corrections requested by the EU ensure that the registration process is concluded in a shorter time.
