Despite the Crisis, Historical Transportation Investments in İzmir Did Not Slow Down

In 2022, marked by record increases in exchange rates, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality made historical investments in line with the goal of bringing the city's public transportation to contemporary standards. While ESHOT and İZDENİZ were strengthened with new investments, a new era started in the rail system. The construction of the Buca Metro, the biggest investment of İzmir, has started, and the Narlıdere Metro and Çiğli Tram have come to an end.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality made significant investments in 2022, from the rail system to İZDENİZ, from ESHOT to smart public transportation systems in order to make urban transportation a smarter and more comfortable structure. The construction works of the Buca Metro, the biggest investment in İzmir's history with a cost of more than 1 billion Euros, have been started. The days are counted for the Narlıdere Metro and Çiğli Tramway to come into service.

Construction started on Buca Metro

The first pile was driven on the Buca-Üçyol Metro Line. In the first phase, 36 columns, each 340 meters long, will be installed in the Buca Metro, and as of March 2023, three tunnel boring machines will operate simultaneously and it is planned to land at the location where the first station will be located. The project is planned to be completed in 4 years.

The trial runs on the Narlıdere-Fahrettin Altay Metro Line, of which 93 percent have been completed, are expected to start on March 30, 2023. The new line is aimed to be put into service on 100 August 30, in honor of the 2023th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. There will be seven stations on the line between Fahrettin Altay and Narlıdere District Governorship, which is approximately 7,2 kilometers long. With this line, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will increase the number of stations in the light rail network to 24 and the length of the rail system to 186,5 kilometers. With the completion of the works, those who take the metro from Bornova EVKA-3 will be able to go directly to the Narlıdere District Governor's Office.

Çiğli Tram is in service next March

Cigli Tramway

About 90 percent of the work on the Çiğli Tram has been completed. The unmanned test flights, which have started to be energized, will start as of December 30. The line is planned to be put into operation in March 2023. The cost of the investment, which will significantly ease the traffic in Çiğli and facilitate access to hospitals, universities and industry in the region, has reached 2 billion liras. The 11-kilometer line will consist of 14 stations.

Karabağlar-Gaziemir Metro is preparing to depart

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which expanded the rail systems in public transportation by covering the city with iron nets, started the works for the Karabağlar-Gaziemir Metro. The routes and stops related to the 6th Stage Karabağlar-Gaziemir Line of the İzmir Light Rail System, which will be carried out in parallel with all the rail system transportations in the city, have been determined. It is planned to connect Karabağlar-Gaziemir Metorsu to Konak with a fishbone line, and to provide İZBAN intersection with ESBAŞ and Adnan Menderes Airport stops. The 32,6-kilometer line, where driverless vehicles will be used, is designed to serve with 24 stations.

In 2022, 48 percent of public transportation will be on ESHOT

ESHOT General Directorate provided public transportation services in İzmir with an expenditure budget of 2022 Billion 3 Million TL in 200. ESHOT realized 2022 percent of all public transportation with approximately 280 million rides in 48.

ESHOT General Directorate, which broke new ground in the purchase of buses, strengthened its fleet in 2022. ESHOT, which purchased 22 midibuses this year, also provided the highest quality public transportation service to narrow and hilly streets where transportation is difficult.

İZTAŞIT is in Cherry and Menemen

In 2019, Kiraz and Menemen districts were also included in the İZTAŞIT project, which İzmir Metropolitan Municipality implemented for the first time in 2022 in Seferihisar in order to integrate individual transporters in the surrounding districts into the public transportation network. With the İZTAŞIT Project, which unites individual public transporters under the roof of a cooperative and takes the advantages of İzmirim Card to the furthest corners of the city, all our surrounding districts will have safe and comfortable public transportation service.

ESHOT workshops

For the maintenance and repair of ESHOT vehicles, which travel an average of 270 thousand kilometers every day, worn-out vehicles were recreated in the workshops of ESHOT. Within the scope of maintenance, repair and renewal activities, 505 buses were reset and put into service just like they left the factory. In order to reduce the increasing input costs, ESHOT workshops also produced spare parts for buses out of warranty, resulting in savings of more than 5 million TL in one year.

We stood by the low-income citizens with Halk Taxis

With the "Public Vehicle" application, implemented by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in 2019 in the light of the "popular transportation principle", the citizens of Izmir were provided with a 50 percent discounted transportation opportunity at certain times of the day. Passengers with full cards saved approximately 258 TL per month, while students saved 66 TL, thanks to boarding of ESHOT vehicles during Halk Taxis hours.

Employment of female drivers

ESHOT General Directorate, which is the heart of urban public transportation in İzmir, has taken a historical step. Bus driver, which is considered to be among the most difficult professions, is no longer the monopoly of men. Employment of female drivers, which started with 2019 people in 29 within ESHOT, which allocates quotas for female employment, reached 2022 in 106. It is aimed to reach 2023 female drivers by the end of 170.

In order to reduce the problems experienced by disabled citizens in İzmir regarding transportation by bus, our 292 buses were arranged so that 2 passengers using wheelchairs could board at the same time.

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerIn line with the investments made by İZDENİZ with the aim of increasing the share of sea transportation in the city, investments were also increased in the General Directorate of İZDENİZ. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality started the process to strengthen sea transportation with 6 electric cruise ships. The feasibility study prepared for 6 electric cruise ships was submitted to the Presidency's Strategy and Budget Department to be included in the investment program. It was announced that the tender works will start with the inclusion of the project in the investment program.

Mavi Körfez joined the İZDENİZ fleet

The 7th ring of the Floating Bridge, Mavi Körfez joined the İZDENİZ Fleet in January 2022. The monthly rent of Mavi Ege and Mavi Körfez, which joined the fleet through the Rental Service, was 655.669 TL in total. With the addition of the Mavi Ege and Mavi Körfez ferryboats to the fleet, one voyage every 15 minutes has started on the Üçkuyular - Bostanlı line. Thanks to these Car Ferries, which are used in a time when passenger vehicle density is low, fuel savings of approximately 1 Million TL have been achieved in just 12 months.

7,5 million savings in docking

Increasing the share of sea transportation in urban transportation, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality İZDENİZ A.Ş. The General Directorate managed to save 2022 million TL in 7,5, which passed in the shadow of the economic crisis. Thanks to the cooperation with the Izmir Shipyard Command, the ships were docked in Izmir instead of the shipyards in Istanbul, thus preventing loss of days to and from Istanbul, travel expenses, personnel expenses, and cancellations of voyages.

A total of 18 voyages were organized to Plomari and Lesbos Ports during the summer period. Izmir Midilli flights will continue in 2023.
