There Can Be Many Reasons Affecting Academic Success and Voting for School

Academic Failure Can Have Multiple Causes
There Can Be Multiple Reasons for Academic Failure

Stating that there is an important relationship between school adjustment and academic success, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan points out that the child's willingness to go to school has an impact on his success. Noting that the root causes of academic failure should be investigated and these problems should be resolved, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Academic failure is not just about the child. Problems arising from family attitudes and school should also be identified and resolved.” Said. Tarhan reminds that motivational statements such as 'You can do it, you will succeed' can also have drawbacks.

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated the relationship between school adjustment and academic success. Reminding that students studying in primary, secondary and high schools are on a break and will start school again on Monday, November 21, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that academic success was reconsidered in this process.

Does he go to school fondly and willingly?

Stating that there are many factors affecting academic success and adaptation to school, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that the attitudes of the parents and the student's commitment to the school are the most important determinants. prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Does the child go to school with love, does he have a high commitment to school or not? It is important to know this in academic success and school adjustment. If the child likes school but has some fears, the reasons for this need to be investigated. If the child feels as if there are many problems while going to school or as if he is going to a court, instead of taking him by force, the reason should be found.” said.

If there is a problem at home, the child may not want to go to school.

Noting that the problems at home can create such negative thoughts in the child, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “For example, there is a problem at home, the child's mind stays at home. He may worry, 'Something will happen to my mother, my mother is sick'. Or there is no warm and peaceful atmosphere at home, or he is very attached to his mother. There is what we call school phobia or school phobia. In fact, he does not have a school phobia, he sees school as an alien planet and is left alone there. Mother-bound children also have difficulties in adapting to school and have difficulties in academic success. We observe in some mother and father patterns. Especially in the first grade, the parents act too kindly and go to school with the child and wait for the child at the door. If this goes on, it is a serious problem. After adjusting to school, parents should withdraw. The child must be told, with good persuasion, that he must go to school.” said.

The “root” causes of academic failure should be identified

Expressing that if the child has academic failure, the reasons for this should be investigated, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “There are many assessment and evaluation systems for determining the causes of academic failure. In this survey conducted by the counselors, the reasons for the failure are tried to be determined. Whether there are individual reasons for failure, family reasons, school or teacher reasons, all these are investigated and solutions are sought accordingly. For example, it is said that we have prepared a questionnaire to help you test the reason for the student getting low grades in the courses and the student is asked to answer the questions. The students were asked the questions 'My family is too big' or 'I am separated from my family', 'I do not understand what my teacher is saying', 'I cannot pay attention to the lesson', 'I learn in the classroom but I forget it quickly' or 'I am not interested in these lessons', 'The information given in this course is not relevant to my work. it doesn't work', 'I love playing games at school'. Counselors evaluate and find the root cause.” he said.

Causes of the problem must be resolved

Stating that after the root causes are determined, a solution can be produced according to the source of the problem, Tarhan said, “If the problem is caused by the school, the school administration and the relevant teacher make the necessary corrections. If it is about the family, the family is informed. Simply putting pressure on the child without root causes is not enough to solve the problem.” warned.

A perfectionist approach can make a child give up

Noting that only the child's deficiency is considered, taking private lessons and providing the child with positive motivation such as 'You can do it or you will succeed' may also have drawbacks. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “This situation can cause boredom in the child after a while. Sometimes high motivation backfires, too. If the child has a high sense of responsibility, when the child gets 97, 'Why didn't you get 100?' There are perfectionist mothers or teachers who ask. In such cases, the child says 'I don't listen to my teacher or my mother anyway' and leaves. If there is a family or a teacher who does not find it important to even get a 97, the child's motivation is broken. Since there is a high motivation, a two-sided thought, which we call black and white thinking, emerges. However, there are also gray areas.” said.

Social and emotional success comes to the fore

Emphasizing that in addition to academic success, social and emotional success comes to the fore today, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Adaptation to school and academic success were 20th century skills, technical and academic success were at the forefront. 21st century skills have changed. In addition to academic success, social and emotional success come to the fore for life success. There is effort and motivation in social and emotional success. The person somehow has attitude and behavior, strategy development, goal setting, self-control skills. There are features such as setting goals for oneself, that is, developing emotional intelligence and learning to make decisions. If he cannot learn these, if he cannot learn human relations, he cannot be successful. It is extremely inconvenient to say that a person is successful or unsuccessful in his life by measuring his level of knowledge alone. School truancy and dropouts are on the rise. Violence is increasing, suicide attempts are increasing.” warned.

The social environment at school also contributes to development

Expressing that the school environment also affects school commitment, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “All teacher-friend relationships are important in the school environment. For example, extracurricular activities increase school engagement. Team sports and various competitions significantly affect the child's commitment to school. In order for the child to learn other social skills besides academic skills, he/she must be in the social environment. He will be among friends, he will make mistakes here, he will learn, he will argue and learn. When we raise the child in a bell jar by constantly protecting him, that child constantly feels the need to connect to a higher power. He prefers to stay standing by taking shelter in someone. In this age, there must be individuality without selfishness. On the other hand, he must learn to say no. Being able to say no is an intellectual skill. The child should be able to say no to his parents when necessary, with a justification.” said.

The child should be motivated

Noting that academic success and adaptation to school are not only dependent on the child, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “There is a student foot, a family foot, a teacher foot here, and all of these feet are important. The most important thing is to ensure that the student likes the lesson and is motivated. Family attitudes are also very important here. The child should be a positive model and their individual needs should be well defined.” said.
