STARTED LAST YEAR

The European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) started to be organized in 2021 to increase female students' interest in computer science. 43 students from 157 countries participated in the online Olympics, the first of which was held in Switzerland last year, and the Turkish national team won a bronze medal.

DIFFICULT ALGORITHMIC PROBLEMS

EGOI was organized for the first time this year in face-to-face format in Turkey. 16 female students from 29 countries, 45 of which are located in the European continent, competed in EGOI, which started in Antalya on 164 October. The Olympiad consisted of two competition days where participants tried to solve challenging algorithmic problems. Each participating country participated in the Olympics with a group of up to 4 female students studying in secondary or high school.

ONE GOLD ONE BRONZE TO TURKEY

The Turkish national team, which participated in the Olympics this year, consisted of 2202 students after the training started according to the results of the first stage exam held in 81 provinces within the scope of the 8 Science Olympics Program carried out by TÜBİTAK BİDEB and after the team determination exam. Duru Özer won the gold medal by ranking first in the points ranking. Bergüzar Yurum also won the bronze medal.

FIRST COUNTRY TO PHYSICALLY

In his evaluation, Minister Varank stated that Turkey was the first country to physically realize the European Girls' Computer Olympics and said, "We are very pleased to host such a beautiful and especially girls-oriented organization." said.

IT WAS FIRST

Stating that the organization and responsibility of the Science Olympics is in TÜBİTAK, Varank said, “We prepare our successful students from all over Turkey for the Olympics in different categories, then these young friends represent their countries. Here, too, our friend Duru competed and got the highest score and became the first among the official participants. We are really happy to host such a beautiful organization and to receive a gold medal.” he said.

ESPECIALLY GIRLS SHOULD WORK IN THESE AREAS

Underlining that science and technology are the fields that shape the future, Varank said, “We want all our young brothers to work and be successful in these fields, but especially for girls to pay more attention to these fields and work more in these fields, Industry and Technology under the leadership of our President Mr. We have different programs and projects planned as the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.” said.

FULL SPEED CONTINUE

Emphasizing that they will continue to invest in these areas, Varank said, “As we invest in these areas, our young friends will continue to make us proud. We are very happy, I hope we get more medals next year. Turkey hosted such a beautiful organization, our work will continue at full speed.” he said.

INVITATION TO THE MATHEMATICS OLYMPIC

TÜBİTAK President Mandal, in his speech addressing the competitors, expressed his pleasure in hosting the Olympics and said, “I hope you all are not having a pleasant time here and you will return home with good memories. Although this is the second Olympics, we managed to gather 45 female students from 164 countries here. On this occasion, I would like to invite you to the Balkan Mathematics Olympiad that we will host in 2023.” said.

I WANT TO BECOME A COMPUTER ENGINEER

Duru Özer, who won the gold medal with the highest score in the Olympics, said that he was 17 years old and went to 11 in Kahramanmaraş TOBB Science High School. Explaining that he has been interested in mathematics and computers since middle school, Özer said, “I started to intensify this interest, especially since the beginning of high school. I participated in the Olympics in 9th grade, passed the first stage and now I am here. Very good people from all countries competed. I am thinking of becoming a computer engineer in the future.” said.

SUPPORTING GIRLS IS IMPORTANT

When asked about Turkey's hosting of the event, Özer said, “I am proud of this because we need more people in this field in Turkey. Computer field lags a little more in the background compared to other Olympics. That's why I think it's a very good thing to have more participants and it's important to support girls as well.” he said.

ENGINEERING OR BASIC SCIENCES

Bronze medalist Bergüzar Yurum also noted that she was 16 years old and attended Kayseri Science High School and said, “The competition was a bit stressful for me, I missed a few questions, but it went well. We had a course in middle school, I started to be interested in computers, but I did not go on it. My interest in the Olympics started in high school. My career plan is to advance in the field of computers, it can be engineering, it can be basic science.” said.
