The case against 103 retired admirals who signed the statement known as the “Admirals' declaration of Montreux” with a demand for imprisonment of up to 12 years continued.
104 retired admirals, who were prosecuted for publishing a statement on the Montreux Convention, appeared in court for the third time today. Some pending defendants and their lawyers attended the hearing at the Ankara 20th High Criminal Court.
In the case heard at the Ankara 20th High Criminal Court, the temporary duty prosecutor requested time to read the opinion, since the main prosecutor was excused. The court, which found the request appropriate, adjourned the case to October 7, 2020.
What happened?
The declaration signed by retired admirals was published on April 4, after the words of Parliament Speaker Mustafa Şentop regarding the Montreux Straits Convention and a photograph of Naval Supply Commander Rear Admiral Mehmet Sarı wearing a cap and robe were reflected in the press.
While the government made a "coup/memorandum" interpretation of the declaration, some opposition parties opposed it.
Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that 5 suspects were detained within the scope of the investigation launched against the retired admirals' statement on April 10, and that 4 suspects were notified to apply to the Police within 3 days.
A week before the Montreux declaration, 126 retired diplomats came together and issued a statement saying, “It will lead to the loss of absolute sovereignty over the Sea of Marmara. Canal Istanbul should be abandoned”.
