China Overtakes the USA in Ranking the Most Cited Scientific Articles

According to the Japanese National Institute for Scientific and Technological Policy, China surpassed the United States (US) for the first time in the number of most cited scientific articles. There are important developments in the field of scientific studies in China, for example, it surpassed the USA in the number of published articles for the first time in 2016.

The articles signed by American researchers were the most referenced articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. However, the Japanese National Institute for Scientific and Technological Policy (NISTEP) shows that China has surpassed the United States in this field as well and placed first.

In this study, the researchers focused on the 1 percent of the most cited articles. However, many articles of this type may have more than one author from different countries. Despite this fact making analysis difficult, NISTEP resorted to a system of distributing credits, according to the authors. For example, if an article has one French and three Spanish authors, 25 percent of the credit goes to France and 75 percent to Spain.

According to this system, China; It had as many as 2018 percent of the most cited articles in 2019, 2020, and 27,2. The USA was right behind with 24,9 percent. In this context, there is a remarkable progress for China, which was only 20 in the number of most cited articles 13 years ago. This year, China outstripped the United States not only in the number of most cited articles, but also in the number of citations.
