Ulugazi Oil Wrestling, which was brought back to life for the first time last year after Atatürk's death, will be held at Maltepe Orhangazi City Park on 17-18 September. A total of 9 wrestlers will wrestle in the competitions where 500 golden arched wrestlers will take part.
Spor Istanbul, a subsidiary of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), brings together wrestling lovers at the Ulugazi Oil Wrestling Festival. Ulugazi Wrestling, which was held on September 1933 every year from 1938 to 19 in order to celebrate the value given to wrestling by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, was held last year for the first time after Atatürk's death.
Ulugazi Oil Wrestling Festival, which has become traditional again by Spor Istanbul, will be held in Maltepe on 17-18 September 2022 this year. In the event, where all the people of Istanbul are invited, nearly 64 wrestlers from 14 tribes, 500 of which are chief wrestlers, will take to the private square. 9 chief wrestlers with golden arches; The struggles of Cengizhan Şimşek, Ali Gürbüz, Recep Kara, İsmail Balaban, Orhan School, Mehmet Yeşilgreen, Fatih Atlı, Şaban Yılmaz and Osman Aynur will be the scene of great excitement. In addition to huge competitions, Ulugazi Oil Wrestling will also host different events appealing to all age groups. Instructive workshops will be set up in the event area, and colorful moments will be experienced with pleasant conversations and shows.
HISTORICAL DAY FOR TURKISH Wrestling
Great Leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who is very interested in sports and especially wrestling, is watching the matches between Turkey and Italy wrestling teams on the radio at Dolmabahçe Palace on September 19, 1933. Excited while listening to the struggles, Atatürk decides to go to the Maxim Hall in Taksim, where the matches are held. The Turkish wrestling team gains superiority over its rivals in the matches Atatürk watched. Stating that September 19, when Atatürk honored wrestling and wrestlers, is a special day, Turkish Wrestling Federation offers "We want to hold competitions under the name of Ulugazi Wrestling on September 19 in all wrestling regions in order to celebrate the honorable day of our sport every year." This proposal of the federation is accepted and wrestling matches are organized every year on September 19th. After Atatürk's death, Ulugazi Wrestling was not held.
