Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, visited Taiwan region of China yesterday, ignoring China's strong warnings and serious diplomatic initiatives.
Seen as a major political provocation, this initiative seriously violated the One China principle and the three joint declarations between China and the United States, damaged the political foundation of Sino-US relations, violated China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and had serious consequences.
USA sabotaging peace and stability
This proved once again that some American politicians who support the separatist forces in their quest for Taiwan independence are the most damaging to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and in the world.
China will of course take all possible measures to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Taiwan issue is about China's fundamental interests. In both the Cairo Declaration published in 1943 and the Potsdam Declaration published in 1945, it was clearly stated that the international community had no conflicts about China's territorial sovereignty over Taiwan.
In all three joint declarations signed between China and the United States, the United States acknowledged that there is only one China in the world, that Taiwan is a part of China, and that the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing China.
There is no way that Pelosi, the number three name in the US administration, was unaware of all these facts. But Pelosi still read what she knew.
Pelosi's latest initiative has once again shown the international community that the main reason for the escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait is the Taiwan authorities' pursuit of independence by gaining strength from the USA, and the USA's attempt to prevent China's development by taking advantage of the Taiwan issue.
Pelosi's political accounts
Pelosi's persistent visit to Taiwan is aimed at achieving her political goals. Pelosi, on the one hand, wants to win votes for the Democratic Party by challenging China's fundamental interests as the midterm elections in the US are approaching, and on the other hand, she wants to add a “bright spot” to her political life.
However, the biggest victim of all this insistence is the Taiwanese people.
Within the US and in the international community, there is much criticism and suspicion about Pelosi's trip. In a comment published in the New York Times, it was pointed out that Pelosi's visit to Taiwan was extremely reckless, dangerous and irresponsible.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, while meeting with Pelosi, who visited Singapore on August 1, emphasized that the stable relationship between China and the United States is important for peace and security in the region.
While Pelosi reads median to China's core interests, can one still talk about the political basis of Sino-US cooperation?
Moreover, Pelosi's political adventure further escalated tensions in the Taiwan Strait, undermining peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. In this context, the whole world saw once again the fact that the USA can sacrifice others for its own interests.
Pelosi's visit to the Taiwan region will not change the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is a part of China and will not prevent China's full unification trend.
