Kaspersky experts shared their views on which cyber threats can threaten users in the playground, and especially children, and how to protect themselves from them.
After the latest leak revealing how Roblox manages content, Kaspersky experts made a statement to protect children and adults from cyber threats. The leaked documents mentioned that attackers on the platform targeted children and gave insight into how the platform is trying to combat childcare.
Additionally, an issue identified in the documents was that Roblox showed that although their systems scanned 100 percent of submitted abuse reports, it only took action on 10 percent of them, pointing out that there are numerous risks to children even on a content moderated gaming platform.
Roblox is an online gaming platform that allows users to create their own game simulations and virtual locations where they can play in different locations or invite other users, and it is stated that there are both harmless and very popular places in the game where players can choose a pet and take care of it or go through the obstacle course with their characters.
The game genres are virtually unlimited, and by the end of 2021 the daily active users reached 50 million, mostly school-age children.
It was noted that in the game world, it is possible to encounter fraudsters who may be members or even the author of the selected game. It was stated that threats from fraudsters can come from within the game world, as well as in ways such as aggression, deception or intimidation. For example, the theme of the Roblox game world can be used to steal login and password from the account and create phishing resources to withdraw more money from the victim. Or, under the guise of in-game currency (Robux), users may be offered to sign up under a real name or pay for a "guaranteed winning lottery". Kaspersky Chief Web Content Analyst Andrey Sidenk said, “Although Roblox is a content moderation system, you should not completely rely on it. It can be particularly dangerous for schoolchildren who, due to their inexperience, are unaware of many cybersecurity rules.” used the phrase.
