The letter written by CHP Deputy Chairman Ali Öztunç to the Brazilian Ambassador is as follows:

“Mr. Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Brazil to Turkey

The aircraft carrier named Nae Sao Paulo set off on 4 August 2022 to reach the Aliağa Ship Breaking Zone in İzmir.

In addition to the process of dismantling ships containing many dangerous substances, environmental pollution created on sea and land, air polluting components are also released into the atmosphere in the works carried out with the oxygen source and cutting method.

İzmir Aliağa Region is a region where many health problems are experienced due to the current pollution load. The pollution values of the region are well above the limit values and there are many health problems in the region as a result.

The aircraft carrier Nae Sao Paulo has been used by France in nuclear tests for many years and contains a significant amount of hazardous and harmful waste, including asbestos and radioactivity. For this reason, the fact that the ship in question was brought to Aliağa for dismantling has received intense reactions from the Turkish public. Democratic public and civil society "Aliağa will not be the garbage dump of the world!" with the slogan of seeking rights against the bringing of the said ship to the borders of Turkey. In the coming days, judicial action will also be taken in this direction.

We do not follow through the press that the said ship's departure from the Brazilian borders for dismantling received a wide response from the Brazilian public as well as in our country.

The Globo News reported that, within the scope of the lawsuit filed by the 16th Federal Court of Rio de Janeiro for the cancellation of the tender held in your country for the dismantling of the Nae Sao Paulo aircraft carrier, an "injunctive injunction" was ordered for the ship to return to the Guanabara Bay, where it is anchored, however, it was shared that the decision has not been implemented yet.

Mr. Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Brazil to Turkey,

As the Deputy Chairman of the Main Opposition Party CHP in charge of Nature Rights and Environmental Policies, Nae Sao, who has caused a great reaction between the peoples of the two countries, will create legal responsibilities for both countries in accordance with international conventions such as Basel Convention, Barcelona Convention, Izmir Protocol. We demand that you take the necessary steps to stop the transfer of the nuclear warship named Paulo to Turkey as soon as possible and to recall the nuclear warship named Nae Sao Paulo to your country's borders in accordance with the aforementioned injunction.”
