First Trial of India's Micro Satellite Launch System Fails

The Indian Space Research Agency (ISRO) was to perform the first flight of the newly developed and highly anticipated Micro Satellite Launch System (SSLV) on 7 August 2022. The system to be launched would carry the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-02) into space before Independence Day.

In this context, it was stated in the statement made by ISRO that the first attempt was unsuccessful. In the statement, “SSLV-D1/EOS-02 Mission update: SSLV-D1 placed satellites in 356 km x 356 km elliptical orbit instead of 76 km circular orbit. Satellites are no longer usable. The error is thought to be caused by a sensor malfunction. ISRO will be back soon with SSLV-D2. expressions were used.

According to experts, ISRO, with its SSLV mission, aimed to address the emerging market in recent years to meet the satellite needs of developing countries.

SSLV-D1/EOS-02 Mission

Under the program initiated by the Indian Space Research Agency, a small satellite launch vehicle has been developed to enable the launch of satellites up to 500 kg into low earth orbits on an 'on-demand launch' basis. The first launch as part of the mission was at 7:2022 (IST) on August 09, 18, from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota.

The SSLV-D1 mission would launch a 135 kg Satellite, EOS-02, into low earth orbit about 37 km from the equator at an inclination of about 350 degrees. As part of the mission, the AzaadiSAT satellite would also be launched. The SSLV is configured with three solid fuel stages, 87 tons, 7.7 tons and 4.5 tons.

Placement of the satellite in the intended orbit was provided by a liquid propulsion based velocity correction module. SSLV can launch Mini, Micro or Nano satellites (10 to 500 kg mass) into a 500 km planar orbit. SSLV emerges as an advantageous system with its low turnaround time, flexibility in hosting multiple satellites, launch feasibility on demand, and minimum launch infrastructure requirements.
