Attention While Reading to Children!

One of the experts of DoktorTakvimi.com, Uzm. Ps. Erdem Ocak underlines that reading interactive books is an effective method for the child to develop skills, thus both the developmental skills of the child will be supported and the parent-child bond will be strengthened.

Reminding that children are in a passive state while reading a book, Uzm. Ps. Ocak explains that with interactive book reading, the child transitions from being a passive listener to an active listening state where he participates in the process:

“Asking questions in some places while reading the book, continuing the children's questions with additional questions, asking what the word means when your child knows the words are some of the ways of interactive reading. Asking the child short-answer and open-ended questions such as 5W1K (What, How, Where, When, Why, Who) instead of closed-ended questions such as “Yes-No”; It encourages the child to think and speak, enabling him to use his language skills. In addition, new information can be taught to the child with feedback. In this way, the child can improve the skills of reformatting what he says, adding new information to existing knowledge, and correcting wrongly learned.

Methods such as asking the child to complete a statement or sentence in a story, to tell what it means by looking at the picture, asking who the characters in the story are or the characteristics of the characters, making a connection between the story and real life if there is an event that can be associated in your real life can be used to read interactive books. It ensures that such activities are included in the book by removing the child from being just a listener, enabling the illiterate child to participate in an activity that is shared, interactive and maintains his interest. This increases the child's social communication, attention, language and self-expression skills, as well as early literacy and academic skills for school, and contributes to the development of vocabulary and self-confidence.
