Advice for Pregnant Women Against Nausea in Summer

Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Op. Dr. Meral Sönmezer gave important information about the subject. Extreme nausea and vomiting, known as “Hyperemesis Gravidarum” and occurring during pregnancy, is one of the most difficult effects of this period for expectant mothers. This problem is mostly seen in the first trimester of pregnancy. Although the exact cause is not known, it is thought that the increased hormones due to pregnancy cause an overreaction and emotional factors play a role in the emergence of the disease. Experiencing weight loss due to nausea and vomiting, which negatively affects the nutrition plan of the expectant mother, may also require inpatient treatment for a certain period of time. Loss of appetite and long-term hunger that come with the heat can also trigger these nausea. Accordingly, nausea can be minimized by the following precautions, especially in summer pregnancies:

  • If your nausea becomes unbearable during the hours you just woke up, you can consume a lightly brewed tea just before getting out of bed.
  • It may be good to consume foods such as pretzels to suppress nausea between sleep and after waking up.
  • Another thing to watch out for in the morning is not to get out of bed suddenly. You can try to sit for a while and then stand up completely.
  • Consuming fat-free and salty snacks such as crackers, rusks, white chickpeas during the day can also relieve your stomach.
  • If sweets or fruit do not cause nausea, you can include these foods in your diet a little more often. Especially summer fruits will be a refreshing and delicious option.
  • You should try to avoid stress as much as possible because stress is also a major factor in nausea.
  • You should stay away from factors such as cigarettes, heavy meals, perfumes that trigger nausea. Especially kitchen smells and heavy perfumes can increase your discomfort.
  • Being hungry for a long time can also cause nausea. The right thing is to spread the nutrition throughout the day and eat at short intervals.
  • You should drink enough fluids between meals. During summer pregnancy, it will be beneficial to increase fluid intake under the supervision of a doctor.
