Morocco is preparing to launch a new high-speed train that will use the Rabat-Fez route as part of its strategy to build a nationwide rail network that will connect its major cities.
It will connect Morocco's oldest imperial cities, Fez, to the capital Rabat by high-speed train, home to the famous University of Karaviyyin, which was founded in the 9th century and is home to the world's oldest university.
Plans for the initial works for the project on the first part of the railway connecting Rabat, Khemisset and Meknes have already been finalized, the ONCF said in a statement on Saturday.
According to the statement, the ambitious strategy of the country's railway authorities envisions the construction of 43 kilometers of railways connecting 1.300 cities.
The report added that once operational, the new lines of the railway will support Morocco's industrial development as it seeks to connect the country's fourteen ports and ten airports to the railway system.
In 2019, Morocco embarked on audacious plans to launch high-speed trains called 'Al Boraq Trains' with the general idea of connecting all major cities in the country.
So far, the Al Boraq train has proven popular with Moroccan rail users, with the number of passengers estimated to double between 2020 and 2021, reaching a total of 2018 million passengers in 13 alone, compared to 2021 million passengers in 2,4. According to ONCF's statistics, turnover of MAD 2020 million ($165 million) in 15,8 reached MAD 317 million ($30.3 million) in the previous year.
